KENNEWICK, Wash.-- This Sunday, July 1st, Mexico heads to the polls to elect a new president and congress. Unlike the United States the president of Mexico only serves one term but the term is 6 years. The elections in Mexico could create several changes in the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States. The economy is by far the greatest concern followed by the war on drugs and immigration.
The current president of Mexico is Felipe Calder?n. He is a member of the Partido Acci?n Nacional or PAN. The PAN's political platform is considered the right wing party.
The polls in Mexico currently point to a double digit victory by Enrique Pe?a Nieto of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional or PRI, which is the centrist party.
Approximately 33 million Mexicans living in the United States could have been eligible to vote in Mexico but only 45,000 are registered.
You can read more about the Mexican elections in the current issue of Tu Decides the bilingual newspaper.
