Galaxy Note II at the FCC with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Bands

Galaxy Note II, the largest smartphone that Samsung has unveiled to the world with Google?s Android operating system on board, has been spotted at the FCC once again.

This time, however, it appears that it was packing the necessary frequencies support for being used in the United States at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

FCC approved a SGH-i317 with 3G and 4G bands at AT&T and in Canada, while the SGH-T889 model was approved with support for T-Mobile?s 1,700MHz AWS frequencies.

There is also a SCH-i605 model that passed through the testing with CDMA and GSM bands inside, along with support for a 700MHz LTE band, suggesting that it should land at Verizon soon.

As Engadget notes, no specific info on the handset?s release date in the United States has been provided as of yet, but October 24th might bring it to shelves.

How to use MT4 VOLUME indicators and data? | AsiaPacFinance ...

If you have been researching on trading strategies, you would have noticed that there are a number of pros who use volume as part of their strategy. This is logical because volume causes the surge in movement traders would like, to capture maximum gain in the shortest period of time. Volume strategies are particularly relevant for stocks trading since each stock exchange can comprehensively provide the exact volume data. Are volume strategies relevant for forex trading strategies then?

We posted this question to our friends working at forex.com, one of the largest forex brokerages out there. They told us that the volume data you see in your MT4 platforms are based on the number of trades done, on that particular server you are connected to. This means you will get a different volume data point depending on which broker you use, and which server you are connected to on that broker. Based on this volume data, volume indicators such as ?Force Index? are plotted.

Because forex trading is not under one centralized market, no one has access to an accurate volume data point. For this reason, some will tell you volume indicators are not accurate on MT4. We put this to the test by visually testing the ?Force Index? indicator and we found it to the useful. Whenever there is a surge in volume on the server we connect to, there is a stronger price movement.

We attribute this to the law of large numbers; when you have a significant number of traders connected to a broker server, the data point becomes statistically significant. There is also an element of the wisdom of crowds ? when there is a collective opinion on a currency?s price direction, there is stronger volume, and consequently stronger momentum in that direction. This is why it is important to use established forex brokers such as forex.com, because they have enough traders to provide significant volume data which can shape trading decisions.

Also note that this volume is not the dollar volume but simply the number of trades done by the traders logged onto the same server. So a $1m trade and a $1 trade will each be contributing 1 unit of volume to the MT4 data set, even though the former trade contributes more towards price action.

In conclusion, while v0lume data on MT4 is not as accurate as volume data provided by stock exchanges, our opinion is that the MT4 volume data, as well as volume indicators, can provide price action insight to forex traders. Don?t give up on volume trading strategies if you are reading up on those!

(you may read my review of that book here), I am not prepared to accept that the cataclysmic events that have rejuvenated and disfigured so much of the Middle East cannot result in good Anglophone writing. A serious researcher of the literary dimensions of these upheavals would, of course, consult Arabic-language poems, fiction, blogs, nonfiction and song lyrics; yet, as a non-Arabic speaking fan of political art, I have no choice but to look for the literary accompaniments to these events in the work of suitably engaged, English-language writers. I am therefore grateful to Hawaii?s Tinfish Press for publishing the new collection by the Cairo-born, Seattle-based poet, Maged Zaher.</p> <p>Zaher began to write in English a few years after arriving in the US from Egypt, and has since published four collections, including the book under review. As indicated by the titles of his collections ? including <em>Portrait of the Artist as an Engineer</em> and <em>Farout Library Software</em>, a collaboration with Pam Brown ? Zaher is something of a wit and has an interest in many facets of contemporary life. But do contemporariness and light-heartedness make for a political aesthetics? Can Zaher?s detached, ironic voice succeed in a cogent treatment of the recent ? and, seemingly, ongoing ? revolutions that have toppled rulers and instigated civil wars?</p> <p>Zaher is an abundantly self-reflexive, self-deprecating writer, all too aware of his own privileged status as a transnational observer of his turbulent birthplace. In concert with the perspective described in one of the earlier poems as ?a postmodern version of everything?, this book does not seem to directly engage with the revolutionary events and their consequences. Many of Zaher?s poems instead depict comedic instances of a world reduced to style, affect and atmospherics, a world saturated by what philosopher Jean Baudrillard has termed <em>transaesthetics</em>:</p> <blockquote readability="6"><p>Sipping beer at random downtown<br/>Cairo is sexy today<br/>The old left are fashion-conscious<br/>And the anarchists are tangoing with everyone</p></blockquote> <p>Zaher?s Cairo is ? to use another famed Baudrillardian term ? a <em>hyperreal </em>space in which the exaggerated aesthetic surface of things has displaced their socio-political Real. Here, what matters is not why millions have taken to the streets and squares of Cairo and other Arab cities, but the potential for such events to offer amusing vignettes in the voice of a sardonic, cosmopolitan onlooker:</p> <blockquote readability="6"><p>Despite the ruling elite<br/>We can now park for free downtown<br/>And watch the masses<br/>Engage ? kindly ? in border disputes</p></blockquote> <p>This level of subjectivity ? no matter how fluid, flexible, nomadic, <em>deterritorialised </em>and so on ? cannot stand in for a tangible investment in transformative political action. And it is to this reviewer?s relief that Zaher?s poetic journey to and from his native city during the uprisings is not entirely made up of a kind of Romantic, apolitical sophistry which has been a dominant feature of so much <em>innovative </em>poetry of the last forty years in affluent Western societies. At its most effective, Zaher?s work is an articulation of the need to break with bourgeois apathy and boredom, and a subtle attempt at taking part in the suffering and struggles of the oppressed.</p> <p>The following poem, for example, starts with a solipsistic, jocular deconstruction of the self, but it soon turns into something of a call to interrogate social hierarchy:</p> <blockquote readability="6"><p>A day without sexual concerns<br/>I got ? unnecessarily ? over-caffeinated<br/>Sitting somewhere in the ghetto<br/>And flipping a coin:<br/>To accept or not to accept the surrounding privileges?</p></blockquote> <p>What would this ?not accepting privilege? look like? The poem?s urbane speaker is perhaps reluctant or unable to imagine this possibility, but he does not resume dwelling on egoistic motifs either. That he comes to propose the prospect of rejecting inequality ? by ?flipping a coin?, however offhand the image may appear ? challenges the speaker?s initial ?sexual concerns? and his anxiety about drinking too much coffee; and it invites the reader to wonder if preoccupations with sex and health are not somehow related to being unfairly privileged.</p> <p>The book?s most engaging and most politically astute poems are those written during the poet?s second visit to Cairo earlier this year. This section of the book starts with a curious piece in which it is deemed ?appropriate? to use language ? ?to cuss? ? against riot police. It seems quite unlikely that the author of these poems would have personally participated in street battles; yet his suggestion to deploy language as a form of resistance grows into a compelling, even truthful proposal for the reminder of the book. Here the poet finds himself engaged in ?netting a home from conversations? and wondering what this home would ?look like without this second language?.</p> <p>It may be observed that here Zaher is indirectly referring to a sublimated urge to somehow revive his own first language ? Arabic ? by writing about the goings-on of an Arab country in his ?second language?, denoting that his project is, at least in part, one of an exile?s never-ending search for an elusive home. As such, Zaher?s poems come to articulate the void of political disenchantment. Incapable of either directly participating in the revolutionary passions of his native country ? by admitting, with admirable honesty, that he is ?not a good rebel? ? he cannot help but find himself drawn to the historic gravity of these passions, and finds it difficult to come to terms with their ?failing concepts?</p> <blockquote readability="6"><p>In between historical events<br/>The body is dragged<br/>So little time to conquer<br/>So little time to make peace with the failing concepts</p></blockquote> <p>The book ends, in my opinion, on a false note, with a rather blas? remark, with Zaher claiming that his work is ultimately ?concerned with sensuality / It was written while walking a city / With soft desire toward everything.? I am delighted to write that in this book?s most gripping pieces, in their mostly understated yet undeniable yearning for an alternative to trendy, commonplace passivity, I?ve found a hard, inquisitive intelligence contemplating the shortcoming of our postmodern condition. Although I have angst about gallows humor as a robust coping mechanism, the content here is telling; for many elderly or otherwise frail patients, surgery is not the answer.</p><p>Clearly this is not the case for all surgical problems in elderly patients, and for those patients who appear to be on death?s door because of their surgical problem, some cold hard steel is probably just what they need. But we must be mindful of the patient whose surgical problem is the final paver on his pathway out; the pneumonia that is the "old man?s friend" may instead present as cecal volvulus with perforation.</p><p>Recently, I cared for an 88-year-old man with severe multi-infarct dementia, third-degree heart block, and an ejection fraction of 10% who was on hemodialysis. He was nonambulatory, nursing home?bound, and admitted to our medicine service with wet gangrene of his left first toe. (The history has been adjusted slightly to protect patient privacy.)</p><p>I told his family that the only treatment to resolve his ischemic necrosis and impending sepsis was an above-the-knee amputation, which I would not recommend because it was unlikely to prolong his life or improve its quality. They were taken aback, and I spent more than an hour explaining to his wife and daughter why cutting off the leg of this once-distinguished World War II veteran right before he died was not a good idea.</p><p>Families ask, "You mean you aren?t going to fix it?" because they fail to recognize that the surgical problem is a sign of a much larger and inexorable journey toward death. Although the "fix it" metaphor may be a simple way to explain to a young healthy person the need for a complicated operation, it fails to convey the context here where surgery could win the battle but lose the war.</p><p>I have colleagues who see this as a failure of primary care. They wonder why patients and families are unprepared for the inevitable terminal event and have not considered how frail health predicts a poor long-term prognosis. I suspect there are many reasons for this, not the least of which is unwillingness on the part of the patient or family to tackle these issues before crisis sets in.</p><p>Nonetheless, at 2 a.m. when an 85-year-old woman with Alzheimer?s dementia, COPD, and acute kidney injury is brought in from her nursing home with toxic megacolon, it is the surgeon who must help the patient?s family understand that she is dying, which is the context for making a surgical decision.</p><p>How can we do this? First, it is important to be clear with the patient and/or family that you would not recommend surgery. While it would be overly paternalistic to say that surgery is not an option, we can explain that there is a real choice to be made and that palliative care is an excellent plan. Too often, including surgery as an option is interpreted as a recommendation, so it is important to clarify where you stand.</p><p>Second, for families who insist that the patient would want "everything" done, it helps to clarify what they mean by "everything." Everything can mean anything from "everything that might provide maximal relief of suffering even if it might shorten life" to "everything that has any possible chance to prolong life even a small amount, regardless of its effect on patient suffering" (Ann. Intern. Med. 2009;151:345-9).</p><p>Third, we can borrow some helpful phrases from our colleagues in palliative care. When last we saw the chief justice of the United States on the bench, John Roberts was joining with the Supreme Court's liberals in an unlikely lineup that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Progressives applauded Roberts' statesmanship. Conservatives uttered cries of betrayal.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Now, the Supreme Court is embarking on a new term beginning Monday that could be as consequential as the last one, with the prospect for major rulings about affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Many people on both the left and right expect Roberts to return to the fold and side with the conservative justices in the new term's big cases. If they're right, the spotlight will be back on Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose vote typically is decisive in cases that otherwise split the court's liberals and conservatives.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">But Roberts will be watched closely, following his health care vote, for fresh signs that he's becoming less ideologically predictable.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">It may be that the dramatic health care decision presages "some shift in his tenure as chief justice," said Steve Shapiro, the American Civil Liberties Union's national legal director. "Or does it give him cover to continue to pursue a conservative agenda?"</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The first piece of evidence could be in the court's consideration of the University of Texas' already limited use of race to help fill its incoming freshman classes, which comes before the court Oct. 10. The outcome could further limit or even end the use of racial preferences in college admissions.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Roberts has expressed contempt for the use of race in drawing legislative districts, calling it "a sordid business, this divvying us up by race," and in assigning students to public schools, saying that "the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The written arguments submitted by both sides in the Texas case leave little doubt that Kennedy, not Roberts, holds the prized vote. The challengers of the Texas program and the university itself cite Kennedy's prior writings on affirmative action a combined 50 times.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The court also is expected to confront gay marriage in some form. Several cases seek to guarantee federal benefits for legally married same-sex couples. A provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act deprives same-sex couples of a range of federal benefits available to heterosexual couples.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Several federal courts have agreed that the provision of the law is unconstitutional, a situation that practically ensures that the high court will step in.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">A separate appeal asks the justices to sustain California's Proposition 8, the amendment to the state constitution that outlawed gay marriage in the nation's largest state. Federal courts in California have struck down the amendment.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Once again, many legal analysts expect Roberts essentially to be against gay marriage. "The outcome clearly turns on how Anthony Kennedy votes," said Georgetown University law professor Michael Seidman.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The justices may not even consider whether to hear the gay marriage issue until November.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Another hot topic with appeals pending before the high court, and more soon to follow, is the future of a cornerstone law of the civil rights movement.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">In 2006, Congress overwhelmingly approved, and President George W. Bush signed, legislation extending for 25 more years a critical piece of the Voting Rights Act. It requires states and local governments with a history of racial and ethnic discrimination, mainly in the South, to get advance approval either from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before making any changes that affect elections.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The requirement currently applies to the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It also covers certain counties in California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota, and some local jurisdictions in Michigan and New Hampshire. Coverage has been triggered by past discrimination not only against blacks, but also against American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hispanics.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The court spoke skeptically about the provision in a 2009 decision, but left it mostly unchanged. Now, however, cases from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas could prompt the court to deal head on with the issue of advance approval. The South Carolina and Texas cases involve voter identification laws; a similar Indiana law was previously upheld by the court.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">It is unclear when the justices will decide whether to hear arguments in those cases. Arguments themselves would not take place until next year.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Yet there still is a chance that the court could become enmeshed in election disputes, even before the ballots are counted. Suits in Ohio over early voting and provisional ballots appear the most likely to find their way to the justices before the Nov. 6 election, said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine law school.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Among other important cases already on the court's docket:</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">? A high-stakes dispute, to be argued first thing Monday, between the business community and human rights advocates over the reach of a 1789 law. The issue is whether businesses can be sued in U.S. courts for human rights violations that take place on foreign soil and have foreign victims.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">? A challenge to the use of drug-sniffing dogs in two situations. Florida police used a marijuana-sniffing dog's alert at the door of a private home to obtain a search warrant to look inside the house. The question is whether the dog's sniff itself was a search. A separate case looks at the reliability of animals trained to pick up the scent of illegal drugs.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">? A challenge to the detention of a man who police picked up a mile away from an apartment they had a warrant to search. Occupants of a home may be detained during the search for the safety of officers, but this case tests how far that authority extends away from the place to be searched.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">? Rowling</span>, whose adult fiction debut "The <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348789812_2">Casual Vacancy</span>" hit the shelves on Thursday, you watch a movie in your hotel, avoid reading newspaper reviews and later in the evening address 900 people at a question-and-answer session.</p> <p> The 47-year-old read from her new novel and took questions on death, digital publishing and the Olympics opening ceremony at her first public appearance to promote The Casual Vacancy held at London's Southbank Centre (southbankcentre.co.uk).</p> <p> She engaged openly with fans, at one point accepting a gift from a breathless visitor from Spain whom she embraced and kissed on stage, and later personally signed hundreds of copies of her new book.</p> <p> Asked by moderator Mark Lawson how she had spent her day, she replied: "I've spent most of the day trying to avoid newspapers. I will read reviews, but I don't like to do it on a day where I've got to go out and talk about the book.</p> <p> "We sat in our hotel and watched 'Men in Black 3'. I'd never seen it. It was very good".</p> <p> Rowling, who received mixed reviews for her gritty tale about a small English town, added that she probably would read what critics had to say eventually, just as she did with the seventh and final <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348789812_1">Harry Potter</span> instalment published in 2007.</p> <p> "With ('Harry Potter and the) Deathly Hallows' I didn't read any of the reviews at all for ages.</p> <p> "I kind of felt about Hallows the way I feel about this book. In both cases I felt well, I've done the best I can do, the book is what I want it to be, so, I don't mean it in an arrogant way, that's it. I'm done. So it doesn't really matter.</p> <p> "I did later. It was months later. It takes the heat out of it if you're not reading them on publication day."</p> <p> "SOCIALIST MANIFESTO"</p> <p> The release of The Casual Vacancy is one of the highlights of the publishing calendar this year, with hefty sales expected for a writer whose Potter series sold 450 million copies and who went on to become the world's first billionaire author.</p> <p> Rowling could not resist mentioning one review, however, which she had clearly either read or been told about.</p> <p> Jan Moir wrote a scathing assessment in the Daily Mail, a newspaper considered the preserve of the middle class which Moir felt <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348789812_3">Rowling</span> had unfairly lampooned in her book.</p> <p> Moir described The Casual Vacancy as "more than 500 pages of relentless socialist manifesto masquerading as literature", a description Rowling, who was an unemployed single mother living on state benefits when she started writing the Potter books, took as a compliment.</p> <p> "A 500 page socialist manifesto. I high-fived my husband!" she joked. "I thought that's all right. It made me laugh so much. Apart from Men in Black 3 that was the highlight of my day."</p> <p> Rowling was asked why death was such a prominent theme throughout her work.</p> <p> "Death obsesses me. What can I tell you?" she said. "I can't really understand why it doesn't obsess everyone. I think it does really, I'm just maybe a little more out about it.</p> <p> "It's made me much less afraid of it," she added later. "I think things lose their mystique when you think about them a lot and you consider them a lot.</p> <p> "I'm frightened of leaving my children. It's the thing I dislike most about the idea that I will die, but death itself doesn't frighten me really."</p> <p> POTTER MISTAKES</p> <p> She said she understood why her publishers, Little, Brown Book Group, had imposed strict conditions on allowing journalists to read the book before publication.</p> <p> "The internet really has changed everything. It's the net that's done it," she explained, quoting examples of other leading writers who had seen their manuscripts end up online or proofs being auctioned on eBay.</p> <p> "As a writer that is a horrible, horrible experience."</p> <p> On Potter, Rowling admitted she had made mistakes, in particular a mirror belonging to the character Sirius Black in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", the fifth book.</p> <p> The "Marauder's Map" used by Potter was also problematic.</p> <p> "Half way through the series I cursed myself for giving Harry the Marauder's Map, because it was far too useful an object so I had to take it away from him and then give it back to him.</p> <p> "That's the trouble. You invent these amazing objects, and then they cause you as much trouble as they solve. Notably more questions and data requests have been coming in over the past couple of weeks; I also am getting the impression of increased stress levels as I talk with various BPR Team members diving into some of the nitty gritty details that will inform their work.? This is expected and not surprising to me at all?and it is a testimony, I think, to the seriousness with which every budget team is approaching its charge.</p> <p>If you are reading any of the HIED press at all, you know that MSU is far from the only institution undergoing a wholesale budget review process this year.? This week?s?<em>Chronicle</em>?featured related stories on both Emory University and Wilson College?and if you haven?t seen the articles, they make for interesting reading.? There is none.? Our Board of Regents has been clear that we must resolve not only a nearly $2 million operating deficit?but also free up reallocated monies to keep tuition low?fund new program development?pay for future salary and benefit increases?and cover myriad additional needs for the coming years.? We?ve chosen to make those recommendations to our BOR utilizing an employee-intensive, inclusive process with the BPR Teams.? And those recommendations are still due to the Board by mid-spring, so that work must go on, no matter what.</p> <p>***As I write this on Thursday, I have just come out of a meeting where some decisions were made that?I?trust?many of you will take as very good news.? As always happens this time of year, we have been working with our third-party consultants to determine pricing for our employee health insurance program for the coming 2013 calendar year.? (You may recall that our health insurance rate renewal follows the?<em>calendar</em>?year, as opposed to the?<em>fiscal</em>?year.)? In looking at 1) the cost savings we?ve realized in our medical plan this past year?and we have to credit those MSU staffers who provide great employee wellness and acute care programs to those of us on campus; plus 2) the fact that we were able to budget a sufficient amount within the present FY13 University Budget to address the plan?s cost increases we will see heading into 2013?there will be no additional employee contribution (i.e., NO cost increase to employees) for health insurance coverage for 2013.? The plan design will remain the same.</p> <p>Many thanks to our standing University Governance committee?the Insurance and Benefits Committee, and its chair, Maeve McCarthy?for their review and analysis in support of this decision.? In another year where overall salary increases were not awarded, I?m sure it is the hope of the IBC members?as well as all of us who deal with this issue administratively?that this will have at least some helpful economic impact for MSU employees.? We want this wonderful college football tradition to continue and grow at Murray State?but for that to happen, please make sure to socialize on campus property safely and responsibly.? We?re committed to making tailgates a safe, wholesome, fun, and clean environment for our students, their families, and all Racer fans.? All state laws regarding underage drinking will be enforced.? And I think most of our participants understand the ?rules? of tailgating that are common to almost all campuses nationwide (e.g., no visible branding, no clear cups or containers, pick up ALL waste and trash by game time, etc.).? Build our Racer Tradition using both common sense and courteousness.</p> <p>***I?ve received many kind comments and emails from the Campus Community regarding my candidacy at Missouri State.? Given my Presbyterian roots I suppose, I take a very Calvinistic view of such things and?no matter how it all turns out?I figure it?s predestined anyway.? But there is one point I would make about it.? This past Wednesday I had the chance to meet with the SGA Student Senate for awhile, and the subject (as you would expect) engendered discussion.? I shared with them the fact that looking at another position at this level is typically not a mark of dissatisfaction or unhappiness, nor does it reflect something in need of remediation or fixing.? Rather, for some individuals (and I include myself in this group) who view their profession or vocation as a calling, there can be a natural inclination or desire to expand one?s reach and scope of influence.? When the right opportunity arises to do so, I think there?s a personal obligation to think about it.? "We are speaking about trillions of carats. By comparison, present-day known reserves in Yakutia are estimated at 1 billion carats."</p><p>The type of stones at Popigai are known as "impact diamonds," which theoretically result when something like a meteor plows into a graphite deposit at high velocity. The Russians say most such diamonds found in the past have? been "space diamonds" of extraterrestrial origin found in meteor craters. [<b>Editor's note:</b> <i>The original version misstated the type of deposit needed to create impact diamonds</i>.]</p><p>They claim the Popigai site is unique in the world, thus making Russia the monopoly proprietor of a resource that's likely to become increasingly important in high-precision scientific and industrial processes.</p><p>"The value of impact diamonds is added by their unusual abrasive features and large grain size," Pokhilenko told Tass. The estimated mass of the halo is comparable to the mass of all the stars in the galaxy.</p> <p>If the size and mass of this gas halo is confirmed, it also could be an explanation for what is known as the "missing baryon" problem for the galaxy.</p> <p>Baryons are pa<span id="vocabhighlighter1042" class="vh-Default-pen" title="rticle">rticle</span>s, such as protons and neutrons, that make up more than 99.9 percent of the mass of atoms found in the cosmos. Measurements of extremely distant gas halos and galaxies indicate the baryonic matter present when the universe was only a few billion years old represented about one-sixth the mass and density of the existing unobservable, or dark, matter. In the current epoch, about 10 billion years later, a census of the baryons present in stars and gas in our galaxy and nearby galaxies shows at least half the baryons are unaccounted for.</p> <p>In a recent study, a team of five astronomers used data from Chandra, the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton space observatory and Japan's Suzaku satellite to set limits on the temperature, extent and mass of the hot gas halo. Chandra observed eight bright X-ray sources located far beyond the galaxy at distances of hundreds of millions of light-years. The data revealed X-rays from these distant sources are absorbed selectively by oxygen ions in the vicinity of the galaxy. The scientists determined the temperature of the absorbing halo is between 1 million and 2.5 million kelvins, or a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun.</p> <p>Other studies have shown that the Milky Way and other galaxies are embedded in warm gas with temperatures between 100,000 and 1 million kelvins. Studies have indicated the presence of a hotter gas with a temperature greater than 1 million kelvins. This new research provides evidence the hot gas halo enveloping the Milky Way is much more massive than the warm gas halo.</p> <p>"We know the gas is around the galaxy, and we know how hot it is," said Anjali Gupta, lead author of The Astrophysical <span id="vocabhighlighter1043" class="vh-Default-pen" title="journal">Journal</span> <span id="vocabhighlighter1044" class="vh-Default-pen" title="paper">paper</span> <span id="vocabhighlighter1045" class="vh-Default-pen" title="describe">describing</span> the research. "The big question is, how large is the halo, and how massive is it?"</p> <p>To begin to answer this question, the authors supplemented Chandra data on the amount of absorption produced by the oxygen ions with XMM-Newton and Suzaku data on the X-rays emitted by the gas halo. They concluded that the mass of the gas is equivalent to the mass in more than 10 billion suns, perhaps as large as 60 billion suns.</p> <p>"Our work shows that, for reasonable values of parameters and with reasonable assumptions, the Chandra observations imply a huge reservoir of hot gas around the Milky Way," said co-author Smita Mathur of Ohio State University in Columbus. "It may extend for a few hundred thousand light-years around the Milky Way or it may extend farther into the surrounding local group of galaxies. Either way, its mass <span id="vocabhighlighter1046" class="vh-Default-pen" title="appears">appears</span> to be very large."</p> <p>The estimated mass depends on factors such as the amount of oxygen relative to hydrogen, which is the dominant element in the gas. Nevertheless, the estimation represents an important step in solving the case of the missing baryons, a mystery that has puzzled astronomers for more than a decade.</p> <p>Although there are uncertainties, the work by Gupta and colleagues provides the best evidence yet that the galaxy's missing baryons have been hiding in a halo of million-kelvin gas that envelopes the galaxy.
