Cops: Woman shot dead at home of 'Blade Runner'

Pistorius, a double amputee born without fibulas in his legs, has trained hard to participate in the Olympics despite having to wear prosthetic legs. NBC's Mary Carillo reports.

A woman has been found shot dead at the South African home of Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, police said Thursday.

Britain's Sky News reported that the woman had been shot in the head and arm and that the 26-year-old Pistorius was being interviewed by police in Pretoria.

Citing local reports, Reuters reported that the woman was believed to be Pistorius' girlfriend and that the sprinter may have mistaken her for a burglar.

"We can confirm a 26-year-old man has been taken into custody following a complaint by a neighbor that there was a shooting at the home of Oscar Pistorius," a police spokesman told NBC News. "He is being charged with murder and he will appear in the Pretoria regional court later this afternoon."

Pistorius was born?without a fibula in both legs and races wearing carbon fiber prosthetic blades.

Known as the "Blade Runner," Pistorius was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics. He qualified for the 400-meter semi-finals and 4 x 400-meter final at the London 2012 Summer Games.?

His website highlighted that Pistorius ran in 11 races?during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralymics and returned home with "two Paralympic gold medals, Paralympic silver, two world records, a Paralympic record, an Olympic individual semi-final and an Olympic final."

He achieved headlines worldwide after qualifying for the 2011 world championships in Daegu, South Korea, and is the world's most famous disabled athelete.

Speaking to Sky News, South African journalist Kribani Pillay described Pistorius as a "national hero and national icon."

Oscar Pistorius may soon make history as the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics. The South African sprinter's emergence as one of the world's fastest runners has generated controversy over whether his carbon fiber prosthetic legs give him an unfair advantage, something he vehemently denies. NBC Sports' Mary Carillo reports.

Lung cancer overtakes breast cancer as most deadly form of disease among UK women

She said: "If these opposite trends in breast and lung cancer rates continue, then in 2015 lung cancer is going to become the first cause of cancer mortality in Europe.

"This is already true in the UK and Poland, the two countries with the highest rates: 21.2 and 17.5 per 100,000 women respectively.

"This predicted rise of female lung cancer in the UK may reflect the increased prevalence of young women starting smoking in the late 1960s and 1970s, possibly due to changing socio-cultural attitudes at that time.

"However, fewer young women nowadays in the UK and elsewhere in Europe are smoking and, therefore, deaths from lung cancer may start to level off after 2020 at around 15 per 100,000 women."

There has also been a steady reduction in breast cancer deaths across Europe in the last four years.

Prof La Vecchia added: "This reflects the important and accumulating advances in the treatment, as well as screening and early diagnosis, of the disease."

The study, published in the Annals of Oncology, looked at cancer rates in all 27 European Union member countries, as well as six individual countries ? France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK.

It looked at all cancers but focused on stomach, intestine, pancreas, lung, prostate, breast, uterus (including cervix) and leukaemias.

The study found that an estimated 1.3 million people will die from cancer -737,747 men and 576,489 women- in the 27 countries of the EU in 2013.

Though that number has increased since 2009, as there have been more cases in that period, the rate at which people have died has actually declined, six per cent in men and four per cent in women.

Lung cancer is still the main cause of cancer death among men, with nearly 187,000 deaths predicted for 2013, giving a death rate of 37.2 per 100,000 men.

Kenya holds 1st presidential debate

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Three weeks before they go to the polls, millions of Kenyans watched and listened to the nation's first-ever presidential debate, with the two front-running candidates trading barbs over the looming trial of one of them in the International Criminal Court.

Morning talk shows in Nairobi on Tuesday were still buzzing about the previous night's debate ? broadcast live on Kenya's TV and radio stations ? among eight presidential candidates who stood behind sleek, futuristic podiums. Much of the focus was on the two front-runners: Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's founding father, faces crimes against humanity charges at the ICC.

The charges against Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto relate to violence that killed more than 1,000 people after the last elections in 2007. The violence was sparked by a dispute over who won the presidency ? Odinga, then an opposition leader, or President Mwai Kibaki, who was seeking a second term. A peace deal allowed Odinga to become prime minister in a coalition government.

Kenyatta's trial is scheduled to start in April in The Hague, but he insisted during the debate that it won't hinder his ability to run the country if he's elected president on March 4. The ICC prosecutor says the trial may last for years.

"If the people of Kenya do decide to vote for me as their president, I will be able to handle the issue of clearing my name while ensuring the business of government continues and our manifesto and agenda for Kenya is implemented," Kenyatta said.

But Odinga said the country cannot be governed remotely, and quipped that running a government on Skype from The Hague would be tough to manage.

During the debate, moderators as well as other candidates asked questions. An audience of about 200 people also questioned the candidates. Local media reported that millions tuned in to the live broadcast.

Monday's debate covered a range of other issues, from the role tribal affiliation plays in the distribution of jobs and resources ? and which is cited as a major cause of problems in Kenya ? to corruption in government, to education and health care.

All eight presidential candidates promised to concede if they lose the elections and to use the judiciary to resolve any issues that arise.

A second debate is set for Feb. 25.

Kenyatta is charged with crimes against humanity for alleged involvement in the murder, forcible deportation, persecution and rape of supporters of Odinga after the 2007 vote. Ruto, a former education minister, faces charges of murder, forcible deportation and persecution of supporters of Kibaki.

Despite supporting rival camps during the 2007 vote, they are now on the same ticket.

Furs, beading, tuxedo jackets feature big in NY fashion shows

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Furs, richly beaded gowns and tuxedo jackets were all over the runways on Tuesday at New York Fashion Week as designers opted for feminine elegance in their fall and winter 2013 collections.

Deep V-necks, draping and long-sleeve gloves were in abundance, along with brocades in muted as well as rich colors and plenty of black.

Badgley Mischka featured gold-beaded jackets and black pencil skirts, sleek tuxedo suits and jackets over gold metallic jersey, and tulle and crepe gowns.

The design duo created a sexy and sophisticated femme fatale look with fox fur vests, collars and wraps and flowing gowns with beaded shoulders and waists.

"I thought it was magnificent -- the romanticism, the fluidity and the craftsmanship," said Gwen Mader, a New York fashion editor. "It was one of the most beautiful collections I've seen this season."

Mark Badgley and James Mischka, who met while studying at Parson School of Design in New York and have worked together since 1988, are a favorite among Hollywood's elite with their glamorous style harking back to an earlier era.

Halle Berry, Helen Mirren and Katie Perry are among the A-listers who have walked the red carpet in their creations.

London-based designer Jenny Packham, who counts the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton among her clients, looked back to the intellectual salons of 17th century Paris, where women discussed the arts and literature, for her designs.

"This collection is inspired by the rich tones and hues of these salons, the shades of midnight blue, scarlet reds, cinnamon and lustrous opals and by the spirit of freedom that imbued them," she said in a statement ahead of the show.

Packham, who has been showing her collections in New York for the past few years, paired an ivory gown with a beaded coat, a sparkling, jeweled sweater with a flowing, full skirt and a red gown with cap sleeves and a sheer overlay.

A teal V-neck gown with a sheer beaded top across the shoulder and bodice was among the highlights of the show that attracted actresses Katherine Heigl and Vanessa Hudgens to the front row.

Like Middleton, who turned heads in a Packham emerald-green pleated gown she wore to a concert in London last summer and wowed onlookers in a shimmering, slinky silver full-length creation during a night out with Prince William, Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson and Kate Winslet are also fans of the label.

Designer Vera Wang chose a more modern look for her collection, with black and beige geometric-cut jackets and coats, pencil skirts, cocktail dresses and gowns with draping at the waist and bold brocades.

Long gloves reaching nearly to the shoulder, furs, angle-cut skirts and wide-cut vests and jackets were also part of the collection that was viewed from the front row by American Vogue Editor Anna Wintour and the magazine Creative Director Grace Coddington.

The semi-annual New York Fashion Week, a precursor to shows in Paris, London and Milan, attracts some 232,000 people to the hundreds of shows at Lincoln Center and throughout the city. The designers, buyers, stylists and press who attend the 500 or so shows spend about $15 million on hotels and restaurants, according to city estimates.
