Secured Payday Loans-Avail Finance At Your Terms - Best Finance1

People get the necessary finance easily after they have made up their mind to take the loan against their property. Secured personal loans have grown popular with borrowers due to several advantages attached to it. 2 of many attractions of secured private loans are lower rate of interest and bigger amount of loan. Borrowers, benefit more if they're well capable in key aspects of the loan.

Secured personal loans can be exploited for numerous purposes such as paying for education or marriage bills, home improvements, going to a vacation trip for example. One can use secured personal loans even for debt consolidation.

Any property having equity is qualified to be placed as collateral with the lender. Generally home is seen as the best collateral due to its higher equity. In case you do not wish to chance home then a salable property like car serves well the purpose. Collateral infect has a bigger role to play in the loan deal. The loan sum and interest rate are decided to a bigger extent on the equity of the collateral. Value of the property as security minus previous total borrowings of the loan searcher makes the equity.

One can borrow any amount starting from $3000 to $75,000 under the choice of secured private loans. The range routinely satisfies requirements of different borrowers. In case of bigger amount, factors like higher collateral value and credit history come into play. Borrowers should avoid taking a bigger loan to save them from burden of debt.

A lower interest rate on secured personal loan is a big lure for borrowers to choose the loan. Compared with other sorts of loans, interest rate on secured personal loans remains 2-3 percent lower. The borrowers therefore save lot of money on the interest. What's more, the rate of interest comes down further when borrowers search for the right lender on Internet.

Lenders provide secured private loans for 5 to 25 years. It might benefit borrowers if they choose to avail the loan for shorter duration so that the debt burden isn't carried for long years. Additionally, shorter repayment duration may also be useful in reducing interest rate. Borrowers of secured personal loans shouldn't be lured by banks ? offer of greater duration loan with low monthly payments as this may lead to total higher interest outgo at the end.

Secured personal loans do a great rescue work for crises ridden borrowers having subprime credit history. Such borrowers should first show enhancements in their credit report by paying off straightforward debt and get the report redone by a reputed agency. Lenders give credit score to examine the danger in giving loan. A credit history of 620 and above is taken as risk free while a lower score may create Problems for borrowers apropos lower rate of interest and larger loan amount.

Though available simply, borrowers must make additional efforts in availing secured private loans at lower rate of interest that fits snugly in their budget.

South Africa: Winnie items for sale

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Dozens of paintings, a silver tea set and other items belonging to Nelson Mandela's ex-wife Winnie will be auctioned to pay off debts she owes to a South African school.

A law firm representing the Abbotts School in Johannesburg says the auction will be held Tuesday at Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's home in the Soweto township.

South African media say Madikizela-Mandela defaulted on a $2,150 payment to the school, where a relative was studying. A court ruled against her in 2011. Her lawyer declined to comment.

Madikizela-Mandela, whose former husband became president after 27 years in prison, was an anti-apartheid leader in her own right.

In March, forensic experts exhumed two skeletons believed to belong to two young activists last seen at her home 24 years ago. No charges have been filed.

Ricardo?Portillo?of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following the assault last weekend, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said Saturday night.

Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching?Portillo?after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.

"The suspect was close to?Portillo?and punched him once in the face as a result of the call," Hoyal said in a press release.

The teen, whose name hasn't been released because of his age, has been booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault. Hoyal said authorities will consider additional charges since?Portillo?has died.

An autopsy is planned. No cause of death was released.

Portillo?suffered swelling in his brain and had been listed in critical condition, Dr. Shawn Smith said Thursday at the Intermountain Medical Center in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.

The victim's family, which publicly spoke of?Portillo's?plight this past week, has asked for privacy, Hoyal said.

Johana?Portillo, 26, said last week that she wasn't at the April 27 game in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, but she said she's been told by witnesses and detectives that the player hit her father in the side of the head.

"When he was writing down his notes, he just came out of nowhere and punched him," she said.

Accounts from a police report,?Portillo's?daughter and others offer more details about what occurred.

The teenager was playing goalie during a game at Eisenhower Junior High School in Taylorsville when?Portillo?issued him a yellow card for pushing an opposing forward trying to score a goal. In soccer, a yellow card is given as a warning to a player for an egregious violation of the rules.

The teenager, quite a bit heavier than?Portillo, began arguing with the referee, then unleashed a punch to his face.?Portillo?seemed fine at first, then asked to be held because he felt dizzy. He sat down and started vomiting blood, triggering his friend to call an ambulance.

When police arrived around noon, the teenager was gone and?Portillo?was laying on the ground in the fetal position. Through translators,?Portillo?told EMTs that his face and back hurt and he felt nauseous. He had no visible injuries and remained conscious. He was considered to be in fair condition when they took him to the Intermountain Medical Center.

But when?Portillo?arrived to the hospital, he slipped into a coma with swelling in his brain. Johana?Portillo?called detectives to let them know his condition had worsened.

That's when detectives intensified their search for the goalie. By Saturday evening, the teenager's father agreed to bring him down to speak with police.

Portillo's?family said he had been attacked before, and Johanna?Portillo?said she and her sisters begged their father to stop refereeing because of the risk from angry players, but he continued because he loved soccer.

"It was his passion," she said. "We could not tell him no."

Feds: Many causes for dramatic bee disappearance

A new federal report blames a combination of problems for a mysterious and dramatic disappearance of U.S. honeybees since 2006. Experts say having so many causes makes it harder to do something about what's called colony collapse disorder. WASHINGTON (AP) ? A new federal report blames a combination of problems for a mysterious and dramatic disappearance of U.S. honeybees since 2006.

The intertwined factors cited include a parasitic mite, multiple viruses, bacteria, poor nutrition, genetics, habitat loss and pesticides.

The multiple causes make it harder to do something about what's called colony collapse disorder, experts say. The disorder has caused as much as one-third of the nation's bees to just disappear each winter since 2006.

Bees, especially honeybees, are needed to pollinate crops.

The federal report, issued Thursday by the Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency, said the biggest culprit is the parasitic mite varroa destructor, calling it "the single most detrimental pest of honeybees."

The problem has also hit bee colonies in Europe, where regulators are considering a ban on a type of pesticides known as neonicotinoids that some environmental groups blame for the bee collapse. The U.S. report cites pesticides, but near the bottom of the list of factors. And federal officials and researchers advising them said the science doesn't justify a ban of the pesticides yet.

May Berenbaum, a top bee researcher from the University of Illinois, said in an interview that she was "extremely dubious" that banning the pesticide would have any effect on bee health. She participated in a large conference of scientists that the government brought together last year to figure out what's going on, and the new report is the result of that conference.

Berenbaum said more than 100 different chemicals ? not just the pesticides that may be banned in Europe ? have been found in bee colonies. Scientists find it hard to calculate how they react in different dosages and at different combinations, she said.

Some of these chemicals harm the immune systems of bees or amplify viruses, said Penn State University bee expert Diana Cox-Foster.

At a news conference Thursday, Sonny Ramaswamy, a top USDA official, said the scientific consensus is that there are multiple factors "and you can't parse any one out to be the smoking gun."

USDA bee researcher Jeff Pettis also cited modern farming practices that often leave little forage area for bees.

Dave Gaulson of the University of Stirling in Scotland, who conducted a study last year that implicated the chemical, said he can't disagree with the overall conclusions of the U.S. government report. However, he said it could have emphasized pesticides more.

The environmental group, Pesticide Action Network North America blasted the federal government for not following Europe's lead in looking at a ban of certain pesticides.

Pollinators, like honeybees, are crucial to the U.S. food supply. About $30 billion a year in agriculture depends on their health, said Ramaswamy.

Besides making honey, honeybees pollinate more than 90 flowering crops. Among them are a variety of fruits and vegetables: apples, nuts, avocados, soybeans, asparagus, broccoli, citrus fruit and cranberries. About one-third of the human diet comes from insect-pollinated plants, and the honeybee is responsible for 80 percent of that pollination.

"It affects virtually every American whether they realize it or not," said EPA acting administrator Bob Perciasepe.

Zac Browning, a fourth-generation commercial beekeeper who has hives in Idaho, North Dakota and California, said the nation is "on the brink" of not having enough bees to pollinate its crops.

University of Maryland entomologist David Inouye, who was not part of the federal report, said he agrees that there are multiple causes.

"It's not a simple situation. If it were one factor we would have identified it by now," he said.

Inouye, president-elect of the Ecological Society of America, said the problems in Europe and United States may be slightly different. In America, bee hives are trucked from farm to farm to pollinate large tracts of land and that may help spread the parasites and disease, as well as add stress to the colonies, while in Europe they stay put so those issues may not be as big a factor.

At the news conference, Berenbaum said there's no single solution to the U.S. bee problem: "We're not really well equipped or even used to fighting on multiple fronts."

Abercrombie Doesn't Want Gross Fat People Wearing Their Clothes

The good folks at Abercrombie & Fitch, it appears, have so little interest in taking fat people's money, they don't even make women's sizes above L or pants above a size 10. Because, you know, why would they? Think of what it would do for the brand! Everybody knows that fat people are all dowdy frumps with no fashion sense?I mean, just look at the clothes they choose to wear, which CLEARLY has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that nearly all major brands refuse to create clothes that fit fat people's bodies because of exactly this type of kneejerk anti-fat disgust. More bedazzled tunics patterned like an antique Parisian suitcase, please! That's what we fat ladies like!

Ashley Lutz at Business Insider took a look at Abercrombie's explicitly anti-fat business practices:

It's not surprising that Abercrombie excludes plus-sized women considering the attitude of CEO Mike Jeffries, said Robin Lewis, co-author of The New Rules of Retail and CEO of newsletter The Robin Report.

"He doesn't want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people," Lewis told Business Insider. "He doesn't want his core customers to see people who aren't as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they're one of the 'cool kids.'"

The only reason Abercrombie offers XL and XXL men's sizes is probably to appeal to beefy football players and wrestlers, Lewis said.

Abercrombie reps declined to comment for Lutz's story, but here are some choice old quotes from CEO Jeffries himself:

?It?s almost everything. That?s why we hire good-looking people in our stores. Because good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don?t market to anyone other than that,? Jeffries said.

Jeffries also told Salon that he wasn't bothered by excluding some customers.

?In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,? he told the site. ?Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don?t belong [in our clothes], and they can?t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely."

Well, at least the feeling is mutual, Abercrombie. I don't want my body's personal brand associated with your creepy, predatory, bedbug-infested, bigoted, racist garbage clothes anyway. But, just to sum up real quick, in case this is confusing for anyone: Fat people won't be able to shed the stigma of being unfashionable frumps until we're actually able to purchase fashionable clothes with the freedom and diversity that straight-size people do. Dear stores, I have money. Let me fucking give it to you.

What It's Like Using Google Glass - Business Insider

I've now tried two Internet-connected glasses: Telepathy One and Google Glass.?

Google Glass absolutely blew Telepathy One out of the water, but it's still not necessarily something I could see myself wearing all day, every day.

Last night, two of my colleagues and I spent about an hour testing out Glass.

My first impressions of the device were that it's surprisingly light, rests comfortably on your face, and doesn't look?that?insanely dorky. (Others will disagree.)

When I put them on, a small screen appeared in front of me, right above my right eye. ?

I felt like I was in an entirely new world. All of a sudden, all the information I needed (news, weather, directions, etc.) could be pulled up right in front of my eyes.?But while Glass keeps you hyper-connected to the Internet, it also makes you feel less involved with what's happening in real-life. To put it simply, I felt like a glasshole.

Some people have raised concerns about what would happen if someone runs up to you and says, "Ok, Glass, Google [insert weird, inappropriate word here]!" and runs away. We didn't test that exact scenario, but from my experience, that's a very real and valid concern.?

While wearing Glass, my colleague Alyson Shontell was nearby having a conversation with someone else in the room. Without anyone saying, "Ok, Glass...," Glass picked up on what Alyson said, and then proceeded to do a Google search for "running."?

Another issue is that sometimes you have to say, "Ok, Glass" a few times before the device registers that you're trying to interact with it. After asking Glass a couple of times to Google "Facebook earnings," it beautifully displayed little cards with snippets of text from the New York Times, Wikipedia, and other sources. Theoretically, you're supposed to be able to open up the full text of the article, but it didn't work for me when I tried it.?

The video recording and Google+ integration is pretty neat. You can stream exactly what you're seeing in real time to a Google+ Hangout, while seeing exactly who you're talking to on the screen projected in front of you.

But the video recording feature does raise some privacy concerns, as there's?no indication on Glass that it's recording. Sure, the Glass display remains on while recording, so outsiders could see that your device is doing something,?but not necessarily recording.?

Granted, this is an early prototype so we imagine Google will improve certain features over time.?

All in all, I'm not sure if Google Glass is for me. As much as I want to be excited about it, Glass feels like more of a neat toy than a truly groundbreaking gadget that will revolutionize the human experience.?

GUSA: A Year in Sport ? Glasgow Guardian

Beatrice Cook

It has been yet another successful year for the Glasgow University Sport Association; alongside the University?s recent triumph at the Glasgow Taxis Cup for the third consecutive year, there has been consistent victory in other areas of club sport, with Glasgow University Women?s Football ?team remaining undefeated in the British University and College Sports (BUCS) Championships ?since February 2011, and the Glasgow University Netball BUCS team dominating over Edinburgh seconds, securing a place in the Conference Cup final to fight to retain their title. However, it is not all about club and competitive sport here at the University of Glasgow. A recent drive to focus on health and wellbeing at the University has been seen in the restructuring of the association?s Council with the introduction of the position of Welfare Convenor, as well as the Sports and Wellbeing Week at the beginning of the second semester. In addition to that, emphasis has been placed on recreational sports and clubs, with the creation of the Recreational Sports League in 2012, opening up sport to a wider collective. GUSA has strived to remain an open and equal institution, and with the coming construction of the new Stevenson Hive Building Project meaning more gym space and increased service levels for all members, it seems that there has never been more of an exciting time for sport at the University of Glasgow.

GUSA has over fifteen thousand members, with approximately two thousand of those students using its facilities on a daily basis; from this statistic alone it is obvious that the association is extremely popular across campus, its partnership with the Sport and Recreation Service (SRS) serving to further strengthen its reputation and influence, whilst its Council, made up of twelve university students elected by their peers, acts on behalf of the student body to ensure a bright future for sport and wellbeing. This popularity was clearly seen at the recent GUSA Council elections, where 1066 votes were cast to decide on who would take up the mantle for one of the seven remaining opposed positions; this is in stark contrast with the other Union elections occurring at the same time. Whilst the Glasgow University Union garnered a respectable 878 returned ballots, the Queen Margaret Union only managed 476 votes, with the healthy turnout for the GUSA elections, where many senior roles within the council were largely unopposed, showing the solid level of support that the association has gathered over the years. Furthermore, by comparing the Student Representative Council (SRC) sabbatical hustings with the GUSA equivalent, the latter having double the turnout, it is evident that students feel they can actively engage and be involved with the association, as well as influencing the future of university sport.

With 48 different clubs and 83 sporting teams affiliated to GUSA competing in BUCS, it is no wonder that this academic year has arguably been the biggest and best yet for the University of Glasgow. The wealth of choice and variety has given new and continuing students the opportunity to get involved in a sport they?ve never tried, or to indulge their competitive side. With groups ranging from the more competition-based hockey, swimming and rugby clubs, to their recreational counterparts, including surfing, ski and snowboarding, as well as canoeing and kayaking, there is a great deal on offer sports-wise. Also, with gym membership at just ?50 for the entire year, this is yet another reason to get involved with GUSA. Moreover, this year has seen the commencement of a recreational sports league, the Glasgow Championship, so for those of us who don?t want to feel under pressure to perform at club level, you have to the chance to participate in regular sporting fixtures in badminton, football, hockey, rugby and squash alongside people of a wide range of performance levels and abilities. This fantastic concept further widens the pool of potential new members, affording students and staff alike the opportunity to get involved in sport in an entirely new and unrestrictive level.

Although this year has seen a distinct move away from the stereotypes of sport, the University of Glasgow still retains its sporting prowess when it comes to the competition stakes; the university?s recent win at the 2013 Glasgow Taxis Cup evidently shows that GUSA has developed a finely tuned machine of sporting excellence, their success adding to Glasgow?s four previous victories at the same competition. In comparison to the previous year?s nail-biting finale, when Glasgow reigned supreme with only a point separating them from rivals Strathclyde, this year?s competition resulted in unparalleled success for Glasgow University, finishing with 49 points overall, compared with Strathclyde?s 35 points and Glasgow Caledonian?s 23.

In addition to this latest victory for the University of Glasgow, GUSA continues to oversee the nurturing of extremely talented sportsmen and women with elite athlete funding. These funds include sports bursaries and the Winning Students scholarship; whilst the former gives those honoured with the bursary both sporting and academic support, as well as taking care of them throughout their competitions and student life, the Winning Students scholarship, Scotland?s national sports scholarship programme, ?supports student athletes with annual scholarships up to ?5,500 to help them achieve their sporting and academic goals.? Furthermore, this year?s GUSA Ball, held on the 9th?of February at the Hilton Hotel, gave the University the opportunity to award these dedicated athletes with a recognition of their achievements; the Rebecca Cooke Award for female athlete of the year went to Ruth Dunn of the prestigious Boat Club, the Bob Wilson Award for best male athlete went to Calum Nicol, a rising star in the field of basketball, while the Glasgow University Triathlon Club were awarded best up and coming club. Dunn and Nicol are amongst many names to look out for in the coming years, and with the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games rapidly approaching, it will undoubtedly be the time for Glasgow University?s finest athletes to step up to the mark.

On a more grandiose scale, the Glasgow University Boat Club, established in 1867, is one of the oldest clubs at the university and arguably the most prominent. Based off-campus in Glasgow Green, it competes on both a Scottish and National level, but certainly the most exciting event in its calendar is the Edinburgh-Glasgow Boat Race. The race, taking place for the first time in 1877, is the second oldest in the UK, with only the famous Oxbridge Boat Race preceding it. According to the Glasgow University Boat Club website, ?Winning is euphoric, losing ? despair? The race is a blur. Heart rates soar, muscles scream with the effort and minds are locked in concentration? Perseverance through all adversities differentiates the winning crew.? This year sees the race taking place on the 25th?of May, and on that day, the media?s attention will turn to see which of the rival Universities will take home the highly sought after title. GUSA?s support has unquestionably helped in GUBC?s success thus far, with access to training facilities at both Glasgow Green and the Stevenson Building allowing the club to harness their full potential.

The general welfare and health of students has always been of great importance to the University, and the introduction of a Welfare Convener in the Council, taken on this year by Leah Tomlinson, as well as the Buddy System and Sport and Wellbeing Week demonstrates GUSA?s continuing dedication to look after its members. The purpose of the newly established Welfare Convener is to ?provide support in the planning and delivery of welfare associated events and initiatives such as the Sport & Wellbeing Week, [being] responsible for the administration and accreditation of the Healthy Body Health Mind award programme [and] works closely with Sport & Recreation in raising the awareness of the benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle to the University community.? The success of the Sport and Wellbeing Week at the beginning of the second semester emphasises GUSA?s commitment to providing a better service for all students, with keynote speakers including the inspirational Scottish track cyclist Graeme Obree and activities ranging from free exercise taster sessions, personal training, to talks on healthy eating and eating disorders, there was something to interest everyone. Starting university is a life changing experience, and GUSA strives to ensure that each and every member is given the best possible opportunity at living a healthy student life by promoting a healthy and happy lifestyle. The Buddy System, where disabled students wishing to get involved in sport are specially paired up with GUSA volunteers and given the chance to participate without any physical or mental barriers. This has proved a vital addition to GUSA?s growing list of achievements, further displaying the association?s ability to provide an open and fair service for all students at the university.

GUSA is a strong institution at the University of Glasgow; its drive to secure a bright and fair future for sport has meant that it not only remains a dominant force in competitive sport, but it also provides an open and diverse foundation for new and continuing students by promoting health and wellbeing, as well as equality within sport and a variety of clubs and leagues to interest both staff and students. (AP) ? Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals know they own the most effective power play in the NHL this season.

They also know it's vital to convert chances against their first-round playoff opponent, the New York Rangers, who were whistled for the fewest penalties in the league.

So after starting 0 for 3 in extra-man situations in Game 1 on Thursday night and trailing ? "We feel, like, a little bit maybe nervous," Ovechkin explained afterward ? the Capitals got a big boost when their captain put the puck in the net on their fourth power play.

Ovechkin's franchise-record 31st career playoff goal got Washington started before less-heralded teammates Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera scored 46 seconds apart, Braden Holtby made 35 saves, and the Capitals came back to beat the Rangers 3-1 to begin the series.

When Washington defenseman Mike Green sent the puck past the net nearly seven minutes into the second period, it ricocheted off the boards and right to a charging Ovechkin, who flipped the puck past Henrik Lundqvist to make it 1-1.

"Kind of a lucky bounce," Ovechkin acknowledged, "but I'll take it."

Carl Hagelin had put sixth-seeded New York ahead 1-0 in the first period ? the only puck that made it past Holtby.

"We kind of hung him out to dry once or twice," Capitals forward Troy Brouwer said about the second-year goalie, "and he helped us out with some huge stops."

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday in Washington.

It's the third consecutive season these two teams are facing each other in the playoffs and the fourth time in five years. The Rangers eliminated the Capitals in seven games in the second round last season.

But Washington is playing a livelier brand of hockey under first-time NHL head coach Adam Oates, a Hockey Hall of Fame forward who shifted Ovechkin from left wing to right wing and helped design the Capitals' league-best power play.

Oates also is not as apt to demand that his players sit back and protect a lead, the way his predecessor, Dale Hunter, did.

"We play more well-rounded now," defenseman Karl Alzner said. "We have guys that can score goals and are allowed to go up there and do their thing. There's really no reins on anybody. At the same time, they know what their defensive responsibilities are."

The Rangers drew six minor penalties, matching their regular-season high.

"Against a power play like that, if you're killing that much, eventually they're going to capitalize," Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said. "They've got enough talent out there to do that, and we've just got to stay out of the box."

Coach John Tortorella agreed, saying: "We can't take that many penalties. ... Hopefully we'll discipline ourselves in the next game."

Only 33 seconds after New York's Arron Asham was whistled for an illegal check to the head, Ovechkin broke his tie with Peter Bondra for most postseason goals by a Washington player.

Ovechkin slammed his shoulder into the glass to celebrate, and chants of "M-V-P!" cascaded from the red-clad fans in the stands.

Ovechkin put his name in that conversation by scoring 22 times in the last 21 games to collect his third Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy ? first since 2009 ? and propel Washington to the Southeast Division title.

That goal energized the Capitals. So did wiping away a 5-on-3 chance the Rangers had for nearly a minute in the second period.

Shortly after that power play ended, Capitals rookie defenseman Steve Oleksy ? who got hit in the face by a puck later in the second period ? sent a pass about 80 feet down the middle of the ice and between Rangers defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh to set up Johansson. The Swede collected the puck at the blue line and beat Lundqvist at the 14:21 mark to make it 2-1.

"We've got to know the guy's behind us," Girardi said. "That's not really acceptable."

It was Chimera's turn less than a minute later, when he took a pass from Mathieu Perreault, spun around near the boards and put the hosts ahead 3-1. That led to mocking choruses of "Luuuundqvist" from spectators.

"Anytime you kill a 5-on-3, especially in playoffs, the momentum goes the other way, for sure," said Chimera, who's scored six of his eight career playoff goals against the Rangers. "If they get a goal, they're feeling it. If we get a kill, obviously the crowd gets into it or we get into it. Everyone's pumped up."

Notes: The Rangers were 13-0-1 when leading after the first period during the regular season. ... Capitals RW Joel Ward returned to action after missing the last nine regular-season games with a bruised left knee. ... The Rangers were without injured LW Ryane Clowe, C Brian Boyle and D Marc Staal.

SEC's new network with ESPN to debut in 2014

ATLANTA (AP) ? The Southeastern Conference and ESPN on Thursday announced a 20-year agreement to operate a SEC network that is scheduled to debut in August, 2014.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said the SEC network will produce 1,000 live events each year, including 450 televised on the network and 550 distributed digitally. Slive says the network will carry approximately 45 SEC football games each year "and a depth of content across all sports."

No financial terms were released for the deal, which continues through 2034.

The announcement came at a news conference attended by Slive, ESPN President John Skipper, 32 SEC coaches and each of the league's 14 athletic directors. The emphasis was this is to be a national network.

"We believe this conference has national appeal," Skipper said. "This is a national network. This is not a regional network. We understand that in the 11-state footprint is where the most passionate fans are, but there are a lot of SEC fans in California and Texas and New York and Connecticut and Virginia and Nebraska."

The league's coaches and athletic directors said having the national network will make all sports more attractive.

"In volleyball, we may want to go after players in California or in the Midwest," said Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity. "Now they can see the SEC is going to have a broadcast of Georgia-Florida volleyball match on ESPN on Tuesday night at 9 o'clock. That's the type of stuff you can only dream about. Now we have it unfolding.

"Football, obviously, that's already well-populated. What it does for your Olympic sports is just immeasurable."

Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, who already has a national recruiting base, said the network will make all SEC schools more attractive to national recruits.

"Everybody's recruiting stretches out because they already may want to play against Florida and Kentucky and everybody here, but being in the SEC means if you come with us, you're not a regional player, you're national," Calipari said. "You don't have to worry you have to stay home because that's your fan base. Your fan base is national. You don't have to worry about regional fan bases. You can go out and create what you want to create."

Still, there was no doubt what sport drove the deal ? football.

Calipari acknowledged he felt left out as he sat on the stage and heard only football-related questions. Asked where basketball fit in the SEC picture, Calipari said "I don't know. How many men's basketball questions were there today? Did we have any? No.

"In the room it was either they wanted to know about money, percentages or what it did with football. I was ready to stand up 'Can I ask a basketball question?' I almost did it, just to do it. Then I said no, I don't want to embarrass anybody."

Georgia football coach Mark Richt said the network should be another empowering tool for the SEC, already the national power with seven straight national championships.

"I don't think there's any doubt," Richt said. "It's not a regional network. It's a national network. It's going to appeal to people of all ages, including the people we're going to be recruiting. My guess is there will be content there that will showcase our players, showcase our facilities and showcase our coaching staff and what we've done in recent past and what we want to do in the future. It can only help us."

Slive also would not discuss details of the ownership arrangement with the SEC and ESPN.

"We would not have done this if we did not believe it would be in the long-term benefit of the league, both in terms of distribution and in terms of revenue," Slive said.

"We're both happy," Slive said.

The Big Ten and Pac 12 also have established networks, but Slive said the SEC's partnership with ESPN is different.

"What's unique and never been done before is partnering with our primary rights holder, which will allow us to move events seamlessly between various platforms," Slive said.

The SEC signed a 15-year deal with CBS in 2008. CBS will still have the first choice of SEC football games.

ESPN senior vice president Justin Connolly said AT&T U-Verse has signed on as the network's first distributor. He said talks are just beginning with other possible cable partners.

Connolly said the deal also gives ESPN rights to oversee the league's corporate partner program. In addition, ESPN will manage and run all of the SEC's digital platforms.

Acorn image editor gets UI overhaul, non-destructive filters

Acorn image editor gets UI overhaul, non-destructive filtersFlying Meat Software (a.k.a. Gus Mueller) has released Acorn 4, the latest major update to its image editing software for OS X. Acorn 4 sports a new user interface, support for non-destructive filters, dramatically improved vector tools and enhancements to performance, among many other changes.

Acorn 4 is aimed at Mac users who need to edit images but don't necessarily need the extensive (and expensive) capabilities of Adobe Photoshop. It sports support for Macs with Retina displays, features masking, text tools, "Instant Alpha" for removing backgrounds and other content, multistop gradients, lots of nifty vector tools, PSD import and export and more.

To incorporate non-destructive filters, Mueller has merged layer styles and filters together. You can create chains of filters just like before, but you can remove them later if you change your mind, without altering the base image. And if you like to manipulate image tone and colors using curves, that's a new feature of Acorn 4 as well. New shape tools have been added, and a new filter HUD lets you manipulate radius and center points for filters.

Acorn 4 is normally $49.99, but Flying Meat is offering the app for $29.99 through May to give people an excuse to upgrade. The software's available both in the Mac App Store and direct from Flying Meat's web site.

If you've given it a try, let me know how you think it compares to the previous version, and to other photo editors you've used.

Woman accused of tainting orange juice at Starbucks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A California woman faces attempted murder charges after police say she tried to sneak orange juice bottles spiked with a lethal amount of rubbing alcohol inside a Starbucks.

San Jose Police arrested Ramineh Behbehanian, 50, late Monday. A customer reported seeing the woman take two bottles of orange juice from her bag and place them in an open-air refrigerated display case at a Starbucks in San Jose around 3:45 p.m., Sgt. Jason Dwyer said Tuesday.

When the customer told a store manager what he saw, Behbehanian fled. A store employee followed Behbehanian to the parking lot and jotted down her license plate number as she drove off. Other employees called 911 after noticing the bottles had a toxic smell, Dwyer said.

Firefighters on the scene tested the contents and determined that the bottles contained a "lethal quantity" of isopropyl rubbing alcohol mixed with the juice, Dwyer said.

No one drank from the bottles, said Dwyer, who praised the customer's quick actions.

"This person was heads-up enough and reported suspicious activity," Dwyer said. "I think that person saved lives by doing that."

Officers tracked down Behbehanian Monday night at her San Jose home located about five miles away from the store. She was placed into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and felony poisoning, Dwyer said.

Police are still looking for a motive.

"We don't know if she has done this before or if she had plans to do this again," Dwyer said. "We have no reason to believe that there are other coffee shops with similar dangers."

Dwyer declined to say how much rubbing alcohol was actually in the bottles, but he said it was sufficient for police to charge Behbehanian with attempted murder.

The Starbucks store in San Jose was closed after Monday's incident but reopened the next morning, Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson said Tuesday.

"We're immensely grateful to the vigilant customer who immediately did the right thing by notifying our store partners who immediately pulled the juice from the shelves and quickly notified the authorities," Hutson said.

As a precaution, Hutson said that the Starbucks store in San Jose pulled all of its remaining juices from the open-air refrigerator and destroyed them. Other Starbucks nearby were also alerted and told to check all their juice bottles to make sure none of its seals were broken.

Behbehanian could make her first appearance in court as soon as Thursday, authorities said.

Fight breaks out in Venezuelan parliament

By Mario Naranjo and Eyanir Chinea

CARACAS (Reuters) - Fistfights broke out in Venezuela's parliament on Tuesday, injuring a number of legislators during an angry session linked to the South American nation's bitter election dispute.

The opposition said seven of its parliamentarians were attacked and hurt when protesting against a measure to block them from speaking in the National Assembly over their refusal to recognize President Nicolas Maduro's April 14 vote victory.

Government legislators blamed their "fascist" rivals for starting the violence, which illustrated the volatile state of politics in the OPEC nation after the death of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez last month.

The 50-year-old Maduro, who was Chavez's chosen successor, defeated opposition candidate Henrique Capriles by 1.5 percentage points. Capriles, 40, has refused to recognize his victory, alleging that thousands of irregularities were committed and the vote "stolen."

The vote exposed a nation evenly divided after 14 years of Chavez's hardline socialist rule.

"They can beat us, jail us, kill us, but we will not sell out our principles," one of the opposition parliamentarians, Julio Borges, told a local TV station, showing a bruised and bloodied face. "These blows give us more strength."

Government parliamentarian Odalis Monzon said she and various colleagues were attacked and beaten during the punch-up. "Today again I had to defend the commander's (Chavez) legacy," she said.

The fracas came after the government-controlled assembly passed a measure denying opposition members the right to speak in the chamber until they recognized Maduro as president.

"Until they recognize the authorities, the institutions of the Republic, the sovereign will of our people, the opposition deputies will have to go and speak (to the private media) but not here in this National Assembly," said Diosdado Cabello, the head of parliament.

Both sides accused each other of starting the incident, which took place behind closed doors without media present.

In a video that pro-opposition private TV station Globovision broadcaster said it obtained from a parliamentarian, various assembly members could be seen hitting each other and scuffling to cries of "stop" from others.

In another potential flashpoint for Venezuela, the government and opposition are planning rival marches in Caracas on Wednesday to commemorate May Day.

Venezuela has been on edge since the April 14 presidential election. At least eight people died in violent protests the day after the vote, while there have been scores of arrests in what the opposition is calling a wave of repression.

Maduro has accused the opposition of planning a coup. (Additional reporting by Marianna Parraga; Writing by Andrew Cawthorne; Editing by Paul Simao)

Romeo Recruit to tackle Future Gem in 3 Steps To Victory 2nd Semi Final at Sheffield

Future Gem made a huge impact in the previous round, and would look for more in the second semi-final of 3 Steps To Victory at Sheffield on Tuesday. The bookmakers have given him high respect because of his excellent show last time. But the black dog is facing a little tougher opposition in the semi-final. And the biggest rival is Romeo Recruit, who battled on well to score in the first round.

An exciting battle is likely to occur between these two big guns. And our vote goes to Romeo Recruit, because he is enjoying a better draw. Standing in the second trap, the son of Bombastic Shiraz has an excellent opportunity of taking an early lead. If he manages to do so, it will surely be an easy journey for him.

Future Gem, on the other hand, is standing in the third trap, which usually does not guarantee a clear passage. The son of Head Bound might face a few nudges from the neighbours, and this mess will surely make things problematic for him.

Other contenders in the pack are: Bansha Mo, Castlelyons Cofi, Bubbly Jaytee, and Vanjohn. The punters are left with only a little time. The competition is due to begin at 20:28 GMT. The winner will bag a prize of 250 pounds as well as a spot in the finale.

Vanjohn, the exciting local, will have to dig deeper in this company. The black dog took the second spot last time around, but needs an improvement to produce the same result in this contest. Bansha Mo becomes a different hound when getting loose. The fourth box however is unlikely to give her any space to move.

Castlelyons Cofi was second to Romeo Recruit last time. The black dog could create a few problems for the same opponent, but we don?t expect a winning move from him. Bubbly Jaytee is well housed as sole wide, but needs an inside crowding to happen. Otherwise, the black dog might fail to do something special. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.
