Kanex Sydnee

For many, the $149 (direct) Kanex Sydnee will seem like a superfluous item?who needs to be able to charge three iPads or other tablets simultaneously? Well, as Apple made clear in its latest iPad event, tablets are finding their way into more and more classrooms and businesses. That means multiple iPads in a single location, all of which will need regular juicing.?For those applications, the Sydnee makes sense, with a clean design that makes it easy to cradle and charge up to four devices, eliminating the mess of cables and lack of available power outlets. And though it's designed with iDevices in mind, the bring-your-own-cable design means it'll work with just about any USB powered device.?It's a little pricey, but if organization is a key concern, the Sydnee is a good solution.

Like many Apple-centric accessories, the Sydnee, available in black or white, adheres to a clean and modern design aesthetic. The smooth lines and glossy finish are attractive, but the stand is constructed from all plastic, so there's a little flex and rattle when you're swapping tablets in and out, but overall, it feels sturdy. There's a small lip on the front of the stand and an interior space that's separated into two compartments by a clear plastic divider. The stand can easily cradle three iPads, even in moderately bulky cases, and there's some rubber padding in the cradle spots, but not enough to fully protect your iPad if the stand gets jostled.

Inline

Around back are four USB ports, each delivering 2.1 amps of power, which is sufficient for all iPads, iPhones, and pretty much any USB-powered tablet or smartphone. Kanex includes three 16-inch 30-pin Apple cables, which, of course, won't be compatible with the 4th-generation iPad or the iPad mini without adapters. Fortunately, since the cables aren't built in, you can bring your own cable or add an adapter as necessary. There's a plastic arm on the back of the stand to wrap lengthy cords around, while a slotted rubber piece up top lets you thread and organize all the cables. A power cord extends from the back of the stand, which occupy a single power outlet.

In my tests, the Sydnee was able to charge three iPads simultaneously, with the fourth USB port open for, say, an iPhone or another USB-powered device. It also worked with various Android powered tablets. You'll only be able to use the outermost tablet while docked, and only in landscape orientation, since there is no cutout for the power adapter on the front lip.

At $150, the Kanex Sydnee does seem somewhat overpriced since it's essentially a 4-port USB hub (which you can get for about $20 online), married to a simple plastic tablet cradle. Still, you get three 30-pin cables in the box, and if you have multiple iPads or other tablets in a single location, the Sydnee will make storing and charging them an easy and organized affair. Otherwise, the appeal is, admittedly, a bit limited.?

Hyde's OT TD keeps No. 7 Ohio State perfect, 29-22

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Kenny Guiton came off the bench in relief of injured star quarterback Braxton Miller to lead touchdown drives in the final minute of regulation and in overtime, with Carlos Hyde scoring on a 1-yard run to clinch No. 7 Ohio State's 29-22 victory over Purdue on Saturday.

Purdue (3-4, 0-3 Big Ten) led 22-14 when Ohio State got the ball with just 47 seconds left in regulation. Guiton, inserted when Miller went out with an undisclosed injury late in the third quarter, hit Chris Fields on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 3 seconds remaining. Guiton then found freshman Jeff Heuerman on the conversion pass to tie it at 22.

Hyde scored on a short plunge for Ohio State (8-0, 4-0) before Purdue's Caleb TerBush, who had two TD passes, misfired on four passes in OT.

Los Angeles police explore Manson Family role in dozen cold cases

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Detectives are looking at the possible role of the Manson Family in a dozen unsolved killings from four decades ago, and believe old audio tapes from a bankruptcy case hold a key to the cold cases, a police official said.

The so-called Manson Family cult, a collection of runaways and outcasts known for their high-profile spree of at least nine killings in 1969, was brought together by a charismatic ex-convict, Charles Manson.

The 12 unsolved killings police are looking into had "similar circumstances, the same time period" as those committed by Manson's followers, Los Angeles police spokesman Commander Andrew Smith said.

"We think there's a chance that they may be related to the Manson Family," he added.

In 1969, Manson became one of the 20th century's most infamous U.S. criminals when he incited his mostly young, female followers to murder in what prosecutors said was part of a twisted plan to incite a race war between whites and blacks.

Among the victims was actress Sharon Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, who was stabbed 16 times by members of the cult in the early morning hours of August 9, 1969. Manson, now 77, is serving a life sentence.

If police can tie the Manson Family to any unsolved cases, it would confirm longstanding suspicions that they committed more killings.

The revelations about the number of unsolved cases investigators are pursuing comes amid a legal battle between the Los Angeles Police Department and an attorney for Manson follower Charles "Tex" Watson, who is serving a life prison sentence in California.

Los Angeles police, who have gone to court seeking to obtain eight hours of recorded discussions between Watson and his late attorney Bill Boyd, have disclosed few details on the cold cases, including the names of victims or dates of the killings.

The tapes, made more than 40 years ago, have resurfaced as a part of a bankruptcy case involving Boyd's now-defunct Texas law firm. In May, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Brenda Rhoades in Texas granted the request for the tapes, but an appeal is pending.

"We're just trying to obtain these tapes to see if they will shed light on these and other cases," Smith said.

Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck had said in a March letter to a U.S. Department of Justice trustee that the LAPD "has information that Mr. Watson discussed additional unsolved murders committed by followers of Charles Manson."

Poll Finds Spotify Most Popular Music Streaming App - Mobile Phones

Advances in?3G coverage and speeds at which data can be transferred, along with Wi-Fi connectivity becoming standard on smartphones, has led to a number of possibilities opening up for the way in which mobile devices can be used.

One of these is the streaming of music, giving users access to an enormous number of tracks without having to store them all on their phone. While playing music over the internet can prove to be costly in terms of data allowance it has become a very popular option with a number of different methods between which smartphone users can choose.

In the latest Dialaphone poll we asked our readers which apps they most commonly use to stream music to their smartphone, and the results showed one particular service is seemingly more popular than any other.

Launched in 2008,?Spotify has become one of the world?s leading music services, with in excess of 15 million users. Working on a free, ad-supported model along with a subscription service, Spotify gives access to a library of over 15 million tracks and options to create, save and share playlists while also recommending new music which users my like.

Having launched its first mobile app in 2009, the service is now supported by major operating systems such as?iOS,?Android and?Windows Phone, along with more obscure platforms such?MeeGo. While mobile users can only listen to music if they subscribe to the paid version of Spotify, reports suggest that 4 million users do just that, possibly swayed by the fact that they are able to download tracks for offline listening.

Receiving more than half of votes cast in our poll, Spotify was the runway winner and has proved that it is a popular mobile service as well as a desktop one. While offering a new business model to the music industry, Spotify has managed to make services like?iTunes look slightly old-fashioned and continues to be an excellent way of accessing music via a smarthphone.

Second in the poll was?TuneIn Radio, an app which connects over 3G or Wi-Fi to online radio broadcasts and streams audio to connected devices. Offering an unbelievable number of stations,?TuneIn is capable of searching for and connecting to any online audio broadcast, ranging from the biggest radio stations, to niche services and even one-off shows and podcast created by people at home.

Built around a simple interface that mimics a standard music playing app separating major stations into different categories and also including an excellent search function,?TuneIn Radio is widely thought to be the best option for listening to radio on the move.

Also a popular choice was?the mobile version of another service which began as a web-based offering before finding popularity amongst mobile users. Soundcloud offers a forum for musicians to upload their tracks and create profiles around them, with the service?s distinctive waveform music players being as easy to share and embed as YouTube videos.

Soundcloud has now taken the place that?MySpace occupied for a time after the overall popularity of the social network declined, and the service?s mobile app does a brilliant job of condensing its web-based counterpart onto a smartphone display.

The different functions of the service are separated into tabs which run along the bottom of the display and allow users to view their own profile and see a live feed of activity by users followed, similar to?Facebook?s wall. Also incorporated within the mobile app is the capability to record straight into Soundcloud and upload a track directly from a phone ? while we?re sure this has many musical uses we have also found it to work brilliantly as a dictaphone too.

Bringing up the rear were two well-know offerings which perform quite different tasks.?Shazam is a brilliant creation which is capable of listening to a song and identifying it, before linking to the track itself. Whilst comparatively recent arrival?Soundhound has doubtless taken some of Shazam?s userbase away, the older app still performs unnervingly well and is both useful and impressive.

Last.fm is another app which offers a mobile version of a web-based service and one which has been around for some time. Put simply, Last.fm allows you to pick an artist before the app streams music that is deemed to be similar to your choice, providing a new kind of taste-based radio. While syncing with Spotify (which offers a similar service itself) Last.fm has still proved to be popular amongst smartphone users.

Running the poll concurrently on the?Dialaphone Facebook page produced some different results, as it often seems to. Spotify was still the runaway leader, accruing more votes than all the other options put together, and Soundcloud performed well too. However, ?TuneIn Radio proved to be more popular amongst our Facebook audience than it did amongst our blog readers.

Overall this poll did receive the greatest response that we?ve ever had but Spotify certainly gained enough votes to call it as the winner. The music streaming service?s app is clearly very popular, as is the web-based version, and its success looks likely to continue.

Euro, shares gain as Spain dodges rating downgrade

LONDON (Reuters) - The euro touched a one-month high against the dollar and European shares extended the week's gains on Wednesday after Spain clung on to its investment-grade debt rating.

The decision by ratings agency Moody's came as expectations grow that Spain is getting close to formally requesting aid from its European Union partners, potentially allowing the region's central bank to begin buying its bonds.

The euro was up 0.4 percent at $1.3110, having earlier hit $1.3125, its highest level since September 17.

But investors remain cautious ahead of a meeting of European leaders in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, where help for Spain and Greece is expected to dominate discussions, and there could still be public disagreement over the next steps.

"Our expectation is ... that the European summit yet again will be a disappointment, and then it (the euro) will go back down," said Callum Henderson, global head of FX research for Standard Chartered Bank.

European shares were also making only modest gains ahead of the leader's summit and the release of a batch of economic data from China, due on Thursday, which will shed light on the extent of the slowdown in the world's second largest economy.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares was up 0.1 percent at 1,113.94 points in early trade, helped by strong gains in financial stocks.

Spain's IBEX index led the gains among the regional markets, rising over 1 percent, while London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> opened with gains of between 0.2 and 0.4 percent. <.l><.eu><.n/>

Moody's decision to keep Spain's bonds at Baa3, albeit with a negative outlook, pulled yields on Spanish government 10-year bonds down 24 basis points to 5.57 percent.

Meanwhile, the gains in the euro sent the dollar to its lowest level in a month against a basket of major currencies <.dxy>, with little reaction seen to the latest televised election debate between president Barack Obama and Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

Obama aggressively challenged Romney on jobs, energy and Libya in their second debate on Tuesday as the Democrat tried to reclaim the momentum in a tight White House race.

The weaker dollar, which makes dollar-priced commodities more attractive for buyers holding other currencies, supported precious metals, with spot gold rising 0.3 percent to $1,752.49 an ounce.

Sickle cell disease: Physics explains how sickling cells make people sick

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Researchers at Drexel University have identified the physical forces in red blood cells and blood vessels underlying the painful symptoms of sickle cell disease. Their experiment, the first to answer a scientific question about sickle cell disease using microfluidics engineering methods, may help future researchers better determine who is at greatest risk of harm from the disease.

They report their findings in Cell Press's Biophysical Journal today.

Capillary Blockage Conundrum

Like many scientific questions, this discovery began with a mystery. Normal, healthy red blood cells are extremely flexible, squeezing and slipping through blood vessels with ease, even passing through the smallest capillaries that are narrower than the red blood cells themselves. But in sickle cell disease, red blood cells are prone to deforming and turning rigid while flowing through the body. A seemingly logical explanation for sickle cell disease was that its symptoms -- painful episodes and organ damage caused by oxygen deprivation -- resulted from the rigid sickle cells forming inside narrow capillaries and then getting stuck there.

In fact, sickle cells do not get stuck inside capillaries. The symptoms of sickle cell disease come from partial obstructions in slightly wider blood vessels farther downstream -- vessels wide enough that sickle cells should be wide enough to flow through. The mystery, then, was why? How do wide, rigid cells regularly pass through the narrowest channels without getting stuck?

To find out, the Drexel researchers developed an experimental setup to test flow through a model blood vessel.

"We created a channel, using microfluidic methods, that would be comparable in size to a human capillary," explained Dr. Frank Ferrone, a professor of physics in Drexel's College of Arts and Sciences and senior associate vice provost for Research, who was the study's senior author.

Ferrone and colleagues took advantage of the fact that, for as long as they are carrying oxygen, red blood cells in sickle disease patients remain as squishy as healthy red blood cells. "They are the functional equivalent of a beanbag," Ferrone said.

It is only after delivering their cargo to the body that hemoglobin molecules become prone to an internal reaction that turns the squishy "beanbag" cells rigid.

To test why the rigid cells do not get stuck in narrow capillaries, the researchers parked a red blood cell from a sickle patient at the center of their artificial narrow channel while the cell was still in its flexible state. Then, using a laser method, they induced the cell's hemoglobin to begin the polymerization reaction that leads to sickling. Then they gradually raised the pressure at one end of the channel. They repeated this experiment multiple times with multiple different red blood cells. The amount of pressure required to dislodge the cells reached its maximum near 100 pascal.

"On the scale of pressures between arteries and veins, that's not a whole lot," Ferrone said. The pressure required to dislodge a rigid cell from inside a capillary is within the range of typical pressures in these blood vessels.

Uncooked Spaghetti in the Beanbag

Based on this experiment, Ferrone said, "we understand these processes in fundamental physical terms -- we know how the stiffness of sickle cell arises, in other words -- and so we have a more complete picture."

That picture, Ferrone explained, describes what happens inside sickling cells as they turn from beanbag-like flexibility while carrying oxygen to rigid inflexibility. Once the hemoglobin releases its oxygen, in sickle disease there is an ensuing molecular chain reaction between hemoglobin molecules to form long polymer chains that are rigid -- a bit like uncooked spaghetti, according to Ferrone. As the spaghetti chains begin to grow inside the beanbag, the cell becomes less and less flexible.

However, if the cell is restrained inside a narrow channel when this reaction begins, its shape is physically restrained from growing outward. The rigid-spaghetti polymer chains inside the cell are blocked from growing beyond a certain length across its radial axis. They exert pressure outward on the cell membrane, thereby causing resistance. As observed in the experiment, that slight resistance requires a small amount of external pressure to dislodge cells from the capillary.

The researchers also found a relationship in their experiment that bolsters this explanation: the higher the concentration of hemoglobin in the cell, the greater the pressure required to dislodge the cell. This makes sense, Ferrone explained, because more hemoglobin would create more polymer chains pushing outward on the cell membrane.

Danger at Intermediate Speeds

Ferrone said these findings also indicate that the timing of polymerization inside sickle cells may be important to understanding patients' susceptibility to symptoms. The researchers described three potential scenarios for red blood cells turning rigid as they circulate in the bodies of sickle disease patients.

In the best-case scenario, the polymerization reaction is so slow that red blood cells remain flexible until they return to the lungs to pick up more oxygen.

The next-best scenario, which Ferrone said was somewhat surprising, is for hemoglobin to polymerize relatively quickly. If the cells begin to grow rigid while in a narrow capillary -- the real-life equivalent of their experimental setup -- then they will be forced into a skinny sausage shape. After passing through the capillary, rigid cells in that relatively thin shape can continue slipping through narrower spaces in wider vessels where partial obstructions have begun to form.

But intermediate-speed sickling is potentially most dangerous, according to the research team. If red blood cells flow past capillaries while still flexible, but later begin to grow rigid in a wider space, they are more likely to become both rigid when larger in size -- making them susceptible to getting trapped in a vessel where previous sickle cells have already caused partial obstructions.

Ferrone suggested that this intermediate-speed danger may be a pitfall that investigators should avoid when developing therapies aimed at slowing the cell-sickling process.

Other authors of the paper with Ferrone were Dr. Alexey Aprelev, an assistant teaching professor of physics in Drexel's College of Arts and Sciences, William Stephenson, a recent Drexel graduate who conducted work on this project for his undergraduate senior project in physics, Hongseok (Moses) Noh, an associate professor in the College of Engineering and Maureen Meier, a nurse at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

Students Call for a National Strike to Change ... - Morocco World News

by Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Taroudant, Oct 16, 2012

The Moroccan Students? Union for the Change of the Education System (SUCES) launched a video on YouTube on Oct 15, 2012 calling on students and their parents to participate in a protest scheduled on Thursday, October 18, 2012 to demand a change of the education system, under the slogan ?Bghina Naqraw? meaning we want to study.

The Movement called for marches and sits in all over the Moroccan cities, and for the involvement of all stakeholders, including associations, human rights organizations, political party and trade unions.

The choice of 18 October is not fortuitous as it coincides with ?global Education Strike.?

The ?Global Education Strike? is the first step in creating a unified force of young people around the world, which aims to change education systems ? they believe- have become oppressive and manipulative.

The students? union asks the participants to raise slogans demanding better quality of education, and free, public, scientific and democratic education for all Moroccans, giving opportunities for everyone to access academic institutions without exclusion.

According to their Facebook fan page, ?The students? union for the change in the education system? is a gathering of young Moroccans who aim to act and to discuss concrete solutions to improve the educational system in Morocco.

Thursday?s sit in will take place before the University Campus of Swissi 2 city of Al Irfane, Rabat. The SUCES intends to hand out more than 150 books for free in addition to music and acting performances aiming to sensitize the audience about the problems of the Moroccan education system.

As we prepare for the sixth edition of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), taking place from January 15-17, the Summit is now firmly established as the foremost annual meeting promoting the advancement of future energies and sustainable technologies.

The decision to host the International Renewable Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi (ADIREC) at WFES 2013 is further evidence of the Summit?s global stature.

Convened by the international policy network REN21, this biennial event attracting government decision makers, corporate chief executives, large-scale investors and the most respected voices in civil society has been touring global cities since the first IREC in Bonn, Germany in 2004.

Now Abu Dhabi will be the focal point for the IREC debate on sustainable development, energy security and climate change, as well as the critical need for innovation to intensify the rate of adoption of sustainable technologies.

?Powering the Future of Energy Innovation? will be the central theme of both the Abu Dhabi International Renewable Conference and WFES. And with thousands of attendees expected from around 140 countries, including heads of state, official delegations and hundreds of conference speakers and exhibitors, the Summit will once again be providing the ideal environment for innovation to bloom.

Access is the key ingredient here ? access to finance, technology, research, and the decision makers behind the new projects and policies making business growth a reality. The introduction of a digital voting system for conference delegates at next year?s conference will also provide access to a new level of insight on future energy developments.

Every year WFES is gaining momentum as a global marketplace for the future energy sector. So it?s time to get involved. Whether you are a multinational firm or a local startup, a research student or a multi-billion dollar investment fund, a renewables expert or an industry novice, you have an important contribution to make to the advancement of future energy and sustainable technologies.

Visit www.worldfutureenergysummit.com to confirm your participation in the 2013 World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi today.

Does staying sober become normal?

Morning All, or afternoon depending on where you are!

I'm new to the sober lifestyle but so far so good. This Thursday I will be at 5 weeks. Not drinking is starting feel ok, I don't think about it much or look for it. I get the odd challenge here and there but overall I'm quite surprised at how I have adapted to the change. It helps being in a healthy environment at home where my wife hardly drinks at all and my kids remind me everyday why I should stay sober.

I notice there are posters on here who have been sober 1,2 or even 10 years. How does that feel? When you reach 2 years sober does it feel totally normal not to drink. Do you ever doubt yourself? Do you ever feel the urge to drink?

I used to smoke cigarettes and gave them up about 4 years ago. Every now and then I still get the urge to have a cigarette. It generally passes but if I'm in certain situation (which funny enough don't happen anymore!) like out with friends having a drink then I sometimes get tempted but I never give in. Is that what it's like to be long term sober? Do you still, now and then, get a craving?

Just wondering.

Congrats on your sober time. I'm so happy it is going well for you so far.

I will have 14 1/2 years of sobriety, and it feels like the norm. I don't know when it changed from being something I didn't do (not drinking) to just my normal life, but it was in the first few years. I struggled with cravings for awhile, so it didn't feel normal not to drink until those cravings were finally lifted. Now I rarely even notice if someone is drinking. Nor do I desire it

Every now and again there is a fleeting thought, but that is all it is. Fleeting, and I don't give it any more thought. I have never lost that fear of what alcohol did to me. I never want to feel that way again.

So the answer is yes, it just becomes normal not to drink. It doesn't require much thought

Thanks for that, kinda makes it all worthwhile.

Its always been a worry of mine that I'll feel like I'm constantly missing out but reading what said gives me a lot of hope. Thanks very much!

I never feel like I'm missing out because I don't drink anymore. I know I can't drink socially. The tough times are usually when it is a social gathering of people I don't know well, but it is generally only the first few minutes that I feel awkward (and that's because I'm not a very social, chatty person by nature).
I always think (omg, if I were drinking I'd be a sobbing mess in the corner or dancing on tables). Never again. :-)

The "missing out" thing goes away. I think I am still noticing changes at 16plus months. The sense of freedom is priceless. I am also far more able to handle "stress" (which used to send me back to the bottle).

It gets easier and it gets better.

I'm 6 months sober and I very rarely find a situation in which alcohol is being consumed difficult now. I would say this happened 2 months ago, perhaps more, so keep going - it will definitely be the norm soon.

That's interesting as it was stress that drove me to drink in the first place!

Its weird how the crutch we use to cope could actually be the cause of the underlying problem. I was drinking heavily because I could not cope with stress at work and I had depression. It was my way to escape and become numb for a few hours. My head now feels a lot clearer and my spirit in general has been lifted since I gave up the drink.

My biggest issue at the moment is having to explain why I'm not drinking. The two times it has come up so far I've not really had a negative response. I've managed to brush it off with comments such as 'Im giving it a rest for a while' or 'i'm on a health kick'. There will be times in the future where I will no doubt get the third degree from friends or relatives. I expect there will be some people who will just want to be nosey and pry into my private life. Not looking forward to having to justify myself at all. My reasons for giving up drinking are personal to me and I'm uncomfortable with being labelled by people. I have my over-bearing sister in law coming to visit this Saturday, I've already conjured up my "I'm on anti-biotic's chest infection excuse"!

At 14 months for me, Sneeker, it is much like what you described with you and cigarettes. It's not so much as a craving anymore, just a thought that disappears when I become aware of it and mindful of it. I see it for what it is and it's gone. I can say that weeks go by without a single one now.

I was sorely tested a few weeks ago, on a camping fishing trip - the same people, place and time of year where I first drank all day every day for a week, about 15 years ago. Eye openers before breakfast, rum all day, and wine with dinner and scotch till oblivion, for four days straight. That appeared as a craving and a strong one too. But I didn't drink, I couldn't really. Failing at sobriety now is out of the question.

Thoughts, memories, urges, cravings, they are all the same to me now. Empty of any force to make me do anything. I can only accept them without getting frantic or panicky. They disappear, and I remain. I will prevail because I may. Timshel.

Well done you, that must have been some test.

I can relate to those sort of weekends myself. Every year me and the boys go away to watch horse racing. Dont get me wrong we always had a blast but boy did we drink, pretty much non stop. I used to feel terrible for a whole week after.

I'm hoping I can suggest something different to my friends this year. Instead of watching sport I think we need to do sport! I'm quite looking forward to playing tennis or golf and then having a relaxing evening and decent nights sleep!

Sneeker, wrapped up in those thoughts are some beliefs of yours that might not be true. Unpack this and see if you can find out what they are. Do you believe that everyone cares about you drinking with them? Do you believe that people will react negatively to you not drinking? Do you believe that you have to justify your choice whether to drink? Are these beliefs true? What does it mean if these beliefs are not true?

I don't know if you have these beliefs or not, but even if you do, they aren't reason to drink. You know what to do simply because you have the power to choose.

I go through my days without the obsession to drink. Does that feel normal? No. What it feels like is a blessing, every day.

Two years sober won't make up for 35 years of drinking. But I haven't felt this "Normal" in years.

Five weeks is awesome. Stay the course. Work on your recovery. Don't slack off just because things feel "normal" and you'll be okay.

No, at 2 years it did not feel "totally" normal. But I drink for a lot of years, like nearly 40, so I was OK with that... At 4 years, I can say that it feels totally normal.

Do you ever doubt yourself?

No

Do you ever feel the urge to drink?

No. No urges. And lately, there are very few moments where I notice anything. Most of those are when I am around others who drink. Those moments pass quickly and painlessly.

So yea, sober becomes normal. Be patient, it happens. . Live for, and don't drink, just for today.

14 years here, and it has felt very normal not to drink for at least 13 of those years.

And really--think about it. We aren't masochists here. If it didn't get better, if life didn't improve, we wouldn't be here, we'd have gone back to drinking.

But life improves immeasurably, as you'll find too. Hang in there.

Hi sneeker Pipparina's response is how I feel too. Not sure when it happened, but at some point I stopped being sorry for myself - stopped feeling like I was missing out.

I remember the first few months obsessing over not drinking. It was on my mind all the time - I worried how I'd get through the holidays, how I'd face upsetting things, etc. The first year, with all the triggers a year can bring, was the hardest. Now it barely crosses my mind, and I can't believe I'm saying that. I once had it by my side at all times.

Glad you brought it up, and hope the answers are helping encourage you.

I don't know really when it shifted, but at almost 4 years sober I never think about it. The life I've built around my sobriety and recovery simply doesn't include anything having to do with my old life, and honestly it's become effortless at this point and probably for the past couple of years. Granted, I got pregnant, had a baby (who will be 3 next month) so there's that distraction.. but I love my life now and I feel very secure in my recovery all of the time.

3 yrs sober and it is normal. Differant life and sooooooo much better. I still have thoughts of alcohol but they are gone as soon as they arrive. I am still terrified of the way my life was and I hope I never forget that. Still go to a lot of AA meetings and work with others. As someone else said, if it was not a lot better why would we do it?

Thanks for all reply's, really inspiring stuff.

Lots of the words written make so much sense and give a great deal of hope. I guess the resounding comment has to be" If it didn't get better, if life didn't improve, we wouldn't be here, we'd have gone back to drinking". So true.

I feel quite liberated at the moment. The other night I was planning a night out to a restaurant with a friend. It suddenly struck me that I could drive and did not have to arrange a taxi or look for bus times! The night out only cost me ?15 because firstly I only drank diet coke and secondly I did not have to pay for a taxi home! It was also nice to able to go home when I wanted and for a change I got home at a reasonable hour. I had a great night and I woke up in the morning without a hangover. This same night 2 months ago would have been so different.

There is definitely a feeling of calm around me at the moment, almost spiritual.

Thanks again for all your comments, they really help!

Yes! The relief you'll feel from the 'burden' of keeping up a drinking lifestyle will be huge. You're doing great.

I guess that I worry what people will think of me. I am also not comfortable with people questioning me and I dont like the idea of people talking about me. I don't like labels either because I think we are all different. I don't like the word alcoholic because for me it has so many negative connotations. I'd be embarrassed and ashamed if people knew/thought I was an alcoholic. Sneeker by sneeker by nature I'm afraid. I've kept this drinking a secret for so long that I almost feel like I have gotten away with it and I don't want people to think any less of me if I come clean and admit or announce I have a problem.

Does that make sense?

Sneeker, what a great thread idea! It is really good to hear from people that have done it successfully that it becomes easier over time, and sobriety is their "new normal". I needed to read that, because early in recovery you feel like all you do is think about drinking and it gets old fast.

I think as far as people asking you about it, I agree, you don't need to go into too much personal stuff with anyone. You can give the "health kick" answer and leave it at that. If someone really probes and ask if you're an alcoholic (which I hope they wouldn't) you can say "no, but I don't want to go down that road so I'm taking it easy" or something similar. It's no one's business but your own. You will find there are people you can discuss it honestly with, but you choose who they are, don't let anyone intimidate you.

Great advice.

I get the feeling (maybe wrongly) that some people feel the need to announce they are recovering alcoholics, which is fine if you are confident enough to say that. I am by nature quite a shy person and I hate fuss.

When I was drinking heavily I used to go out of my way to get others to drink with me. Even when people said they did not want to drink i'd be like 'come on you can have a couple!' I'm afraid I might meet someone like I used to be!

I must have been a real pain in the butt!

Everyday I feel more at ease with my new way of life and I'm sure that one day I'll be totally comfortable with it. I guess when that day comes I wont care what people say or think.

i would much rather let people have their own opinions of me being sober than to show them how i am drunk. if anyne has a problem with me being an alcoholic living sober, then they have a problem.
