Drama in Iran wins Egypt president a bold image

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's international debut made its biggest splash at home. After he publicly denounced Syria's regime while being hosted by Damascus' top ally Iran, Egyptian supporters and even some critics are lauding him as a new Arab leader that speaks truth to power.

That may have been precisely the point. The drama of his Tehran speech boosts Morsi, an Islamist from the Muslim Brotherhood who became his country's first freely elected president, as he works to entrench his authority in Egypt.

His speech also points to new images he is cultivating: The tough, fearless leader who speaks with the voice of a people who chose him. For Islamists, he was a Sunni hero against the Shiites.

"He bows in respect for his people, so world leaders bow to him," proclaimed a photo-montage posted on a Brotherhood-affiliated Facebook page.

In one frame, it shows Morsi bowing his head amid crowds of supporters in Tahrir Square. In the other, it shows Morsi sitting at the Nonaligned Movement summit in Tehran on Thursday, with several dignitaries stooped over him to listen as if bowing and hanging on his every word.

For critics, the gushing support is reminiscent of the unquestioning praise given in state media to his predecessor, ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Moreover, they point out that behind the dramatic gestures, Morsi is so far doing little to bring actual dramatic change in Egypt's foreign policy. Morsi is being cautious, reluctant to turn sharply against Egypt's main Mubarak-era allies, Saudi Arabia, the United States and even Israel. That is in part because he is constrained by the realities of the region and by his need for allies as he tries to address Egypt's domestic woes.

Morsi makes his first visit as president to the U.S. in September for the annual U.N. General Assembly session. Washington might have been expected to be unhappy to see the first visit by an Egyptian president to Tehran since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution. Instead, it joined in the praise.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell welcomed Morsi's comments on Syria as "very clear and very strong," particularly as they were made in Tehran "to some people who need to hear it there."

Since his inauguration in late July, Morsi has promised a more independent foreign policy, saying Mubarak's close adherence to an American line made Egypt ineffectual and irrelevant in the Middle East. Morsi's supporters touted his speech as an example of his new approach.

His flair in Tehran was certainly a break from the tone of Mubarak's foreign policy, which usually saw dry repetitions of long-held stances and shunned drama. In contrast, Morsi swept in to visit a longtime rival, eagerly shook the Iranian president's hand, then gave a hearty call for world support of Syria's rebels against an "oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy."

"People haven't heard an Egyptian leader speaking in this fashion, speaking out a foreign policy position that struck a chord with the region," said Michael W. Hanna, an Egypt expert at New York's Century Foundation. "This is the first time that Egypt struck a populist note in terms of its foreign policy in probably decades."

Even one of Morsi's staunchest domestic critics, Mohamed Abu Hamed, tweeted: "To the president: a salute of appreciation for your speech in Tehran summit. I hope you implement the ideas you mentioned."

He also won praise from ultraconservative Sunnis in Egypt who are key allies for Morsi and who only days earlier were loudly denouncing his trip to Shiite majority Iran. The ultraconservative Salafis despite Shiites as heretics.

In his speech, Morsi hit notes that were music to the Salafi ears. He kicked off the address with a salute to Abu Bakr and Omar, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad and his first successors. Mentioning them was seen as an implicit snub to Iran: Sunnis revere them, but Shiites hate them because they are seen as cheating the man they see as the rightful successor, Ali.

One prominent Egyptian Salafi cleric praised Morsi for affirming Egypt's Sunni identity.

"The comments had a huge effect and shook the hearts of Iranians like earthquakes," said Sheik Mohammed Gweili.

A hardline cleric in Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia, Suleiman al-Odah, wrote on his Twitter account: "Let all Arab leaders go to Iran if they will speak the truth like President Morsi did."

Dozens of supporters lined up the airport road to receive Morsi upon his return from Iran. "Free revolutionaries, we will complete the path," they chanted.

"Egyptians felt that their president speaks with their tongue and is strong through their will that elected him," Hussein Ibrahim, the head of the Brotherhood majority in the most recent, now-dissolved parliament, wrote on his Facebook page. "Outside Egypt, the Arab brothers feel that Egypt is returning to its place and is filling the gap that was caused by the previous regime."

For some, the effusive praise was worrying.

Sarah Othman, a prominent blogger and columnist in the independent El-Badil online newspaper, criticized Morsi's goading of the Iranians with the Sunni Islamic references as "childish, too naive and unbecoming of someone with such a high position." It "was only met with approval by fanatics and sectarians."

She compared it to an earlier instance of bravado by Morsi, when in his first political speech as president before a crowd in Cairo's Tahrir Square he opened his jacket to show he wasn't wearing a bulletproof vest. That may have worked in Tahrir, she said, but "there is something for every occasion."

Ibrahim Eissa, another prominent columnist, said the praise for Morsi overlooked its cautious political calculations. He noted Morsi made little criticism of Israel ? "he didn't even use the phrase 'Israeli crimes," Eissa wrote, and reduced the Palestinian issue to that of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and other measures that Mubarak would usually condemn as well.

So far, Morsi has made little change in the Mubarak-era relationship with Israel. Morsi has promised to preserve the landmark Egypt-Israel peace treaty and security cooperation has continued as Egypt's military wages an operation in Sinai against Islamic militants who have attacked Israel and Egyptian troops.

Morsi has spoken more warmly of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic militant group that rules Gaza. But he has not significantly eased access to Gaza through their shared border, a key Hamas concern. He has also sought to warm up to Saudi Arabia, a key ally of Egypt but a longtime rival of the Brotherhood.

Hanna, of the Century Foundation, said Morsi is in no condition to make major changes at a time when he has to deal with a faltering economy that needs aid from allies.

Egypt "has no economic base upon which to project power in the region. We are talking about a rhetorical shift in the near term."

Troy Flag Day Parade Committee members share their memories of John Kacharian

John Kacharian

COHOES ? John Kacharian?s love for the U.S. flag was especially evident during the years he coordinated Troy?s Flag Day Parades. Today, loved ones will be paying their final respects to him in similar fashion.

Kacharian, whom friends remember as a nice man filled with knowledge about both U.S. history and flag protocol, passed away Monday at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes after a long illness.

According to his obituary, Kacharian graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with several engineering degrees and worked at the Watervliet Arsenal, where he created the Benet Laboratories Museum. He even designed and built his own home in West Sand Lake.

In his spare time, he studied the history of the American flag extensively and later joined Troy?s Flag Day Parade Committee. He was seen as an expert in all aspects of flag handling and protocol.

?Everyone went to him when it came to protocol when it came to the flag,? said Jason Schofield, who met Kacharian when he joined the committee. ?He has a lot of knowledge on the protocol of the flag and he was very into detail. He loved to tell stories and he would always have a story about the flag. He was a wealth of knowledge.?

Jerry Weaver, who also served on the parade committee, said Kacharian would come in and make sure all of the flags were in good condition and not completely worn. While Weaver described him as being very quiet and reserved, he added that Kacharian was dedicated to the committee.

He explained that it was difficult to hear Kacharian speak during the meetings but said people quieted down so that he could be heard.

?You had to really hush the meeting up if you wanted to hear him,? Weaver said. ?He was a great guy and well respected.?

Kacharian was married to his wife, Halina, for 40 years. The couple did not have any children. Weaver recalled that it seemed as if Kacharian?s own health began to decline in 2005 after Halina passed away at the Eddy Village Green.

Secretary of the Troy Flag Day Parade, Cindy Wilson, said that although Kacharian had a caretaker, he couldn?t be left alone and was soon placed in the nursing home. Because Kacharian couldn?t drive and thus didn?t have a way to get himself to and from the meetings, Wilson said she would not only pick him up but also got him a sandwich. Continued...

Weaver said people were learning through word of mouth about Kacharian?s passing, as he didn?t have very many relatives around. Once Kacharian was put into the nursing home, Weaver said not too many people heard from him.

?When we heard he went to a home, nobody really had any contact with him because no one really knew his relatives,? Weaver said. ?I thought about it and, wow, because it just seemed like he hung in there for quite a while.?

Wilson said it was sad to hear of his passing, noting that it will leave an impact on the parade itself as he was the go-to guy for any information about the flag.

?I felt really bad because that?s somebody you learn something from,? Wilson said. ?There was the Flag Day Parade and there?s John with all of the answers.?

Human and soil bacteria swap antibiotic-resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Soil bacteria and bacteria that cause human diseases have recently swapped at least seven antibiotic-resistance genes, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis report Aug. 31 in Science.

According to the scientists, more studies are needed to determine how widespread this sharing is and to what extent it makes disease-causing pathogens harder to control.

"It is commonplace for antibiotics to make their way into the environment," says first author Kevin Forsberg, a graduate student. "Our results suggest that this may enhance drug resistance in soil bacteria in ways that could one day be shared with bacteria that cause human disease."

Among the questions still to be answered: Did the genes pass from soil bacteria to human pathogens or vice versa? And are the genes just the tip of a vast reservoir of shared resistance? Or did some combination of luck and a new technique for studying genes across entire bacterial communities lead the scientists to discover the shared resistance genes?

Humans only mix their genes when they produce offspring, but bacteria regularly exchange genes throughout their lifecycles. This ability is an important contributor to the rapid pace of bacterial evolution. When a bacterial strain develops a new way to beat antibiotics, it can share the strategy not only with its descendants but also with other bacteria.

Earlier studies by other scientists have identified numerous resistance genes in strains of soil bacteria. However, unlike the seven genes described in this report, the earlier genes were dissimilar to their analogs in disease-causing bacteria, implying that they had crossed between the bacterial communities a long time ago.

Most of the antibiotics used to fight illness today originated from the soil. Bacteria use the antibiotics, in part, as weapons to compete with each other for resources and survival. Scientists have long acknowledged that gives environmental bacteria an evolutionary incentive to find ways to beat antibiotics.

"We wanted to try to get a broader sense of how often and extensively antibiotic-resistance genes are shared between environmental bacteria and pathogens," says senior author Gautam Dantas, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and immunology.

The researchers isolated bacteria from soil samples taken at various U.S. locations. The bacteria's DNA was broken into small chunks and randomly inserted into a strain of Escherichia coli that is vulnerable to antibiotics. Scientists treated the altered E. coli with multiple antibiotics.

"We knew that any E. coli that continued to grow after these treatments had picked up a gene from the soil bacteria that was helping it fight the antibiotics," Forsberg says.

Scientists took the DNA from soil bacteria out of the surviving E. coli and prepared it for high-throughput sequencing. Dantas' laboratory has developed techniques that make it possible to simultaneously sequence and analyze thousands of chunks of DNA from many diverse microorganisms. The DNA can be selected for a single function, such as antibiotic resistance.

When the scientists compared antibiotic-resistance genes found in the soil bacteria to disease-causing bacteria, they were surprised to find some genes were identical not only in the sections of the genes that code for proteins but also in nearby non-coding sections that help regulate the genes' activities.

Since bacteria have such large population sizes and rapid reproduction times, their DNA normally accumulates mutations and other alterations much more quickly than the DNA of humans. The lack of changes in the resistance genes identified in the study suggests that the transfers of the genes must have occurred fairly recently, according to Dantas.

In some soil bacteria, the genes are present in clusters that make the bacteria resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics, including forms of penicillin, sulfonamide and tetracycline.

"I suspect the soil is not a teeming reservoir of resistance genes," Dantas says. "But if factory farms or medical clinics continue to release antibiotics into the environment, it may enrich that reservoir, potentially making resistance genes more accessible to infectious bacteria."

Tran?shu?manism: H+ or?H? ?

Just when most people finally have some aware?ness of the word ?Humanism,? that under?standing is now eclipsed with the advent of Tran?shu?manism, or H+.? Like its pre?de?cessor, Tran?shu?manism is all about man and what man can do or be, except that it now incor?po?rates a sophis?ti?cated cock?tail of sci?ence to make it happen.

To restate: Whereas Humanism relied on a meta?phys?ical fan?tasy to achieve its goals, Tran?shu?manism for?ti?fies its meta?phys?ical wish-list with sup?pos?edly objec?tive sci?ence. Never mind that much, if not most, of that objec?tive sci?ence hasn?t been invented yet. To a Tran?shuman, just the promise of future sci?ence is enough for them to count it as reality today.

Starting in the late 1990?s, a pur?poseful merging of four branches of sci?ence has pro?duced a new dis?ci?pline referred to as the ?Con?ver?gence.? The four com?po?nents are Nan?otech?nology, Biotech?nology, Infor?ma?tion Tech?nology and Cog?ni?tive Sci?ence, and are often referred to as NBIC. For those not familiar with the field of Cog?ni?tive Sci?ence, it is an inter?dis?ci?pli?nary study that includes psy?chology, arti?fi?cial intel?li?gence, phi?los?ophy, neu?ro?science, learning sci?ences, lin?guis?tics, anthro?pology, soci?ology and edu?ca?tion. (see Tha?gard, Paul, ?Cog?ni?tive Sci?ence,?, 2008)

The merging of hard sci?ences with areas like psy?chology, phi?los?ophy, edu?ca?tion and soci?ology should make you sweat. This is the final fron?tier of Tech?noc?racy started in the 1930?s, which merged sci?ence with social engi?neering. Whereas Tech?noc?racy was con?cerned with society as a whole, Tran?shu?manism is con?cerned with the person himself.

Since I have been speaking and writing over the last 4?years about Tech?noc?racy and Tran?shu?manism, they have started to spill over into the public media, and not because I was shining light on them, either. Indeed, they are cap?turing the public?s fancy.

The ABC?News head?line two days ago, Human Immor?tality in 33 Years Claims Dmitry Itskov?s 2045 Ini?tia?tive was not a sur?prise to me, but I am sure it left many scratching their head. At 31,? Itskov is a Russian bil?lion?aire with a big vision and lots of cash to burn. It was not a jour?nal?istic fluke that ABC?News picked up his story: He is also a sen?sa?tion in Huff?in?gton Post, Wired Mag?a?zine, IBTimes, count?less radio shows and TV inter?views, etc.

On his own web?site, Itskov writes ?Neo-Humanity 2045: A Global Strategy for the Evo?lu?tion of Humanity in the Third Mil?len?nium,? in which he states,

?The for?ma?tion of such an intel?li?gence will not limit the indi?vid?u?ality or freedom of any single person???on the con?trary, it will max?i?mize cre?ative devel?op?ment and facil?i?tate the unlocking of bound?less poten?tial. All this will inevitably lead to the emer?gence of a new society???a society of immortal superpeople.

?Neo-humanity as an ide?ology, a socio-economic struc?ture, and a new form of civ?i?liza?tion will usher in a new era in people?s lives???the tran?si?tion to a cosmic super?civ?i?liza?tion of neo-humans.?

Neo-humanity? A new form of civ?i?liza?tion? Immortal superpeople?

Itskov has plenty of ?inter-faith? reli?gious sup?port listed on his web?site as well: The Dalai Lama, Swami Vish?nude?vananda Giri Ji Mahara, Mahasiddha Pilot Baba and even Lazar Puhalo, Arch?bishop of Ottawa of the Orthodox Church in America.

The average response to stuff like this is dis?be?lief, and I say that from my own expe?ri?ence with many audi?ences. I encourage you to take it seri?ously how?ever, because the bil?lion?aires of the world (aka the Global Elite) are get?ting behind Tran?shu?manism and Tech?noc?racy with all the zeal they can muster. They are drag?ging in top sci?en?tists, top lab?o?ra?to?ries and top uni?ver?si?ties, throwing money at them like there is no tomorrow. They view them?selves as the new con?trollers of human and soci?etal evo?lu?tion???and worse, they have a plan for you! If you don?t like that plan, then now is the time to speak?up.

If it isn?t clear to you why Tech?no?cratic and Tran?shu?mans reject Bib?lical Chris?tianity, it?s because the God of the Bible is in direct com?pe?ti?tion with their goals to recreate earth and the people in it, in their own image. Whereas the Bible speaks of the laws of sin and death as immutable truths, sci?ence now promises an escape into immor?tality, omni?science, omnipres?ence, etc. They are espe?cially hos?tile toward the thought of needing a Savior because they believe they are fully capable of saving them?selves and on their own?terms.

Economy

There have been many studies over time that examine the rela?tion?ship between the stock market and the economy. Does the economy improve because of rising stock prices or do stock prices rise because of an improving economy? The cor?rect view makes a lot of dif?fer?ence in how you inter?pret today?s economy.

One such analysis was con?ducted on the Indian economy and market and con?cluded, ?stock market devel?op?ment leads to eco?nomic growth? rather than the other way around. This rela?tion?ship is termed ?supply-leading? versus ?demand-following? which would sug?gest the opposite.

Another study titled, Finan?cial Devel?op?ment and Eco?nomic Growth: Time Series Evi?dence for the case of UK, point?edly concludes,

?The evi?dence obtained from the co-integration and causality test strongly sup?ports the supply-leading hypoth?esis, which sug?gests that the causal direc?tions run from the devel?op?ment of the finan?cial sector to the real sector (mea?sured by real GDP per capita)?

Con?ven?tional wisdom states just the oppo?site: Stocks rise as a result of eco?nomic development.

The fact of the matter is that the cur?rent uptick in eco?nomic activity, weak as it is, is the result of still-elevated stock prices. When stock prices turn down, eco?nomic activity will follow like the tail fol?lows the dog. If you view today?s market as con?cluding a counter-trend bounce that pre?cedes the next bear market leg down, as I do, then there is no reason to pre?dict some kind of mir?acle eco?nomic recovery over the next 2???3?years, which I?don?t.

Firefox 15 to arrive in finished form on August 29th, promises truly stealthy updates for all (update 2: stand-alone, Android too)

Firefox 15 to arrive in complete form on August 29th, promises truly stealthy updates for all Mozilla has been keeping to a tight schedule of having a completed Firefox release every five to six weeks, and it's very much on track. The browser team's Ehsan Akhgari has confirmed that a properly polished version of Firefox 15 should reach the download servers on August 29th. When it does arrive, the new release will primarily expand the silent updates that Windows users first saw in Firefox 12: future iterations on all platforms will install themselves in the background and should be truly ready to go the next time the browser starts. Beyond this deliberately subtle change, the finished version 15 upgrade should still support Opus audio as well as clamp down on out-of-control memory use from add-ons. We're looking forward to not noticing the differences very shortly.

Update: Although it's not on the front page yet, both Mozilla, reader Josh and this writer can confirm that Firefox 15 is rolling out sooner than expected -- there's no reason to wait.

Update 2: It's now easier to get a stand-alone copy if you're not updating, since Mozilla just updated the Firefox front page to reflect the new version. Android users are also getting an update through Google Play that brings earlier speed updates to tablets, a personalized start page and a whole host of extra fixes, some of which come directly from the desktop Firefox 15.

The auto mechanic will go over the symptoms with you and help you figure out the problem yourself. You will get useful feedback and sketches that are simple to understand. The effectiveness of this system depends on the latest information on automotive repairs you get with a click of a button. Just about any problem can be fixed by you if you have the most current information. No matter what auto mechanic does the work, ATS will assess the work done on your vehicle. ATS offers a considerable database of garage fixes and automotive software and all technicians are experienced and ready to help you solve your problem. The fixes are e-mailed to you as soon as they are analyzed.

The best approach to fixing your car problem is going to be properly researched and evaluated. Due to their big collection of repair information, they?re able to combine wiring diagrams and common fixes and figure out what parts are causing the problem using secret techniques. Many of the troubleshooters are actually retired engineers and mechanics who understand the various systems and can analyze the problems very well. Your trouble might be much more complicated and hard to fix, so the scanners used by the top garages will be used by the technicians to guide you. ATS is a great package with a one time payment for lifetime membership plus there is a 90 day money back guarantee.

The simplicity of ATS is actually the reason why it works so well. You can find out things to tell your repair shop, saving them time so they will charge you less. It helps if you test your fixed vehicle only to find that the problem is still there. Together with problems like no-starts, stalling, and hesitations, you can get an analysis with sketches and quick and practical solutions.
Learn how to repair small problems before they escalate into big problems. Until eventually your trouble is fixed, you will get limitless support, and any vehicle driver can use ATS, even garage owners and mechanics in car moving service.

Not everybody can fix their own car but at least with this information, you know exactly what the mechanic needs to do. With ATS, you will definitely save time and money and maybe headaches as well. Automobile problems are definitely annoying but at least you have an option to make the repairs less distressing.

Money-saving strategies taken to the max

Katy Wolk-Stanley from Portland, Ore., hasn't bought much new in five years. She did it by shopping at thrift shops and using store credits, and explains how being frugal helped her pay off $20,000 in credit card debt

By Martha C. White, TODAY contributor

What?s more extreme than buying a cartful of groceries with nothing more than a few bucks and a sheaf of coupons? How about not buying food at all ? for an entire month?

?"In January, I don?t spend any money on food," said Beth McAfee-Hallman,?who blogs about her adventures in extreme savings at?OneFabulousMama.com.?Buying baking supplies in bulk and preserving her own fruits and veggies gives her a stockpile, and she barters her baked goods for wild turkey, venison and eggs. "So if I have to scrap my grocery budget, I can do that," she said.

Kristen Cross of the blog?TheFrugalGirl.com?said that when her family was in what she termed "stay-afloat mode" several years ago, deregulation had her scrambling for a solution to skyrocketing utilities bills. "I spray-painted gallon milk bottles black and filled them with water and put them on my deck in the sun ... and I used that for the kids? bath water and washing dishes," she said. "The water actually got pretty hot."?

Could you go 5 years without buying anything new? This mom did

This might sound radical, but for some Americans, it's a way of life. Extreme couponing is practically an Olympic sport these days, but frugal living bloggers are playing the X Games of savings.

The guiding principle of the extreme saving community is ?The Compact.? Started by a group of friends in 2006, it?s a pledge to refrain from buying anything new for one full year. There are a few exceptions like food and "non-couture or ornamental"?underwear, but it's a pretty radical departure from typical American consumption patterns.

Extreme savers draw a distinction between themselves and hard-core couponers. Although both groups aim to save money, they take opposite paths to reach that goal.

"Deal blogs are kind of like, 'Buy this, buy this' ? really, you don?t need to go shopping," Cross said. "It's sort of a more pared-down, less consumer-y way of saving money."

"My most intense efforts lie in trying to stay away from buying new stuff," said?Katy Wolk-Stanley, whose website?TheNonConsumerAdvocate.com has the tag line, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without."?

"I?m totally fine having two pairs of jeans and five pairs of shoes," Wolk-Stanley said.

Some extreme savers have frugality ingrained into them from a young age. Growing up, "There was very little to go around," said McAfee-Hallman.?"The image of Little House in the Big Woods, as the family prepared for winter and their attic was stocked ? that made a lasting impression on me as a very hungry little girl," she said.

Other frugal living devotees came into the notion later in life.?

Katy Wolk-Stanley thought she could go a month without buying anything new. Five years later, she's continuing her "non-consumer" lifestyle, based on borrowing and buying used. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports, and Stanley talks about how her frugality has affected her life.

Finding herself?$20,000 in debt in February 2008, Natalie McNeal swore off discretionary?expenditures like dining out, hair appointments and manicures. ?I saved $400 and a light bulb went on,? said McNeal, who launched the blog?TheFrugalista.com?and later followed up with a book about her embrace of the frugal-living lifestyle.

?It wasn't always easy, she said. "Before becoming a frugalista, I never cooked at home ... I knew maybe like two dishes." To keep her commitment, McNeal said she wound up eating tortilla chips and salsa for dinner some nights.

Eating at home and shopping at thrift stores are just the tip of the iceberg for extreme savers. Even when most Americans would probably relegate something to the trash, they practice the art of salvaging.

?"Say one of my kids came home from school and their binder had broken,"?said?Sara Tetreault, who blogs at at?GoGingham.com, "We'd take?out the cardboard and the metal spine, because those components get recycled ... instead of just automatically thinking 'I need to throw this in the trash can.'"

When McNeal's bed, which had been damaged by movers, collapsed one day, "I was like, 'Oh my goodness, I can?t pay to have it fixed,'" she said. "I went to Lowe's and got a $3 cinder block so I could prop up the corner, and you?d never know."

?"I used to waste a lot of food and I had these piles of food in front of me and I was like, 'I?m so embarrassed,'" Cross said. She started taking pictures of her weekly fridge clean-outs, hoping that sharing her piles of wilted veggies and abandoned leftovers would motivate her to waste less.?

Tetreault took an an even harder line against trash for her family of four, paring back garbage pickup to once a month.?Although the cost difference with weekly pickup is "negligible," Tetreault said she saves on the back end because the question of what to do with the packaging deters her from buying new things.?

Monthly trash pickup? People who take a commitment to living frugally concede that the "ick" factor is an occupational hazard.

"In the hot months, our garbage gets really smelly and I do think, 'Oh man, why do we do this again?'" Tetreault said.

"I would always buy generic diapers," said Amy Suardi, blogger at Frugal-Mama.com and mother of four kids. "Yeah, sure I had to clean a lot of blowouts, but I thought that was just part of being a mother of a baby ? That's a lot of what frugal living is ? it's doing it the hard way."

Rental Properties in San Diego, CA

Rent Sense: Rental Ownership is a Unique Business
By Neil Fjellestad & Chris De Marcos
FBS Property Management

We have built a healthy San Diego business out of advising independent real estate investors, acquiring and managing rental properties for clients while providing superior housing alternatives for qualified renters. Our business of four decades provides us a practical snapshot of the local economy.

So, what does our experience tell us about the unique rental housing business in San Diego? Here are some highlights that have remained pretty constant over the last year or so -

? With rare exception our renters pay on time every month.? Rent payment has taken its appropriate place as a financial priority as it is clearly their largest household expense.

? Renters want to pay their rent online. They want the privacy, security and convenience of this method. Since providing our renters with this alternative they pay sooner and avoid additional late charges.

? Most of our rental owners are responsive to capital requirements to improve their properties though often forced to defer or accomplish in stages due to personal financial constraints. This is an excellent time to get improvements done on time and for less.

? Our rental owners can?t afford to allow a non-paying renter and they can?t abide extended vacancy. The number of days rented is more important than the rate so a year?s lease is normally required while a substantial premium is required for a month-to-month alternative.

? Most of our clients that are involved with either selling or re-financing become extremely frustrated with the lack of expected results and/or the extension of the time to accomplish.

? The cost and time to accomplish daily routines that require permission and/or cooperation with governmental agencies and public authorities continues to grow and frustrate due to cutbacks in most departments.

? We can see from the employment information provided by renewing and potential renters that most of the jobs lost over the last 3-4 years are gone. Employers have determined other ways to accomplish or greater productivity just requires fewer to get the job done. Other jobs are being created but with different requirements and rewards.

? Small businesses like ours will hire and/or expand cautiously when and if they can control risks (the cost of doing business) while believing that the benefits of growth outweigh the alternatives.

Lenovo ThinkStation S30

As is the case with any other computer, the desktop workstation for you is the one that comes closest to meeting your specific needs. If you're shopping for a do-everything business system, there's a compelling case to be made for the Lenovo ThinkStation S30: It blends high-level processing with graphics performance, giving you enough general strength to do almost anything you want. But digging down a bit deeper reveals this as a computer more aptly suited to video-oriented tasks than for traditional data-crunching uses, which may or may not be right for you. If you think your business will benefit from the balance it provides, the ThinkStation may be worth its fairly steep price. If not, other, less-expensive systems may better suit your needs.

Design and Features
Under normal circumstances you shouldn?t expect a workstation to excel in the looks department, and that's a standard the ThinkStation S30 lives up to. Basic black from stem to stern, with little to distinguish it except a bit of hexagonal mesh ornamentation on the front, it looks austere and serious, as though it?s interested in nothing more than getting right to work. In accordance with this, it?s largely bereft of exciting features, the most notable exception being the sturdy handle affixed to the front of the top panel. This makes the system easy to carry, deploy, and pull out from the cubbies beneath desks where it?s most likely to be stored. A latch on the side panel opens the PC instantly, without requiring you to even remove thumbscrews.

Just as its outward appearance is of the buttoned-down, do-the job mentality, so is the S30?s hardware both inside and out. At the heart of it all is a fine Intel Xeon E5-1620 CPU; the quad-core chip can run eight threads a time thanks to Intel?s Hyper-Threading technology, and runs at a highly respectable clock speed of 3.6GHz. Joining it is a solid 8GB of RAM, which is upgradable to as much as 128GB (only two of the eight DIMM slots are full), and a 2GB Nvidia Quadro 4000 workstation video card that sports one DVI and two full-size DisplayPort outputs. (The card is held in place inside the computer by two large, potentially difficult-to-remove plastic brackets.) Should you want to install additional cards, there's another PCI Express (PCIe) x16 slot, one PCIe x4 slot, one PCIe x1 slot, and one traditional PCI slot still available for this.

Two 7,200rpm 500GB hard drives in a RAID Level 0 configuration provide the storage, and can be expanded by way of two internal SATA ports; the optical drive is a standard, but undeniably useful, DVD?RW. An external multiformat card reader supports the CF, XD, SD, and MS formats. Should you wish to expand further, there are two open bays: one external 5.25-inch and one internal 3.5-inch. The included 610-watt power supply is more than sufficient for these components, and should give you a bit of freedom for later expansion.

Externally, ten USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports provide you plenty of connectivity opportunities; but there are only two USB 2.0 ports on the front panel, along with the headphone and microphone jacks, and hooking up the included keyboard and mouse will remove two of the others from play right off the bat. The preinstalled operating system is the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional, and comes bearing a bit of bloatware: Rescue and Recovery, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, WinDVD, Ulead DVD Movie Factory, and a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security. (The chances are good that your organization will have your own solutions, so you?ll probably have at least a little bit of uninstallation to do.)

At least you receive some fairly robust protection with the S30: It?s covered by a three-year parts-and-labor warranty, and you have access to around-the-clock toll-free technical support.

Performance
Lenovo ThinkStation S30The ThinkStation S30 delivered excellent performance?enough to earn the top score we've seen in this class (3,494) in our Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system benchmark. It faltered, however, in Handbrake, CineBench R11.5, and Adobe Photoshop CS5, in each surpassed only by the Dell Precision T1600 . The Dell?s lead in each case was not overwhelming?1 minute 13 seconds in Handbrake (versus 1:14 for the S30), 6.87 in CineBench (versus 6.38), and 2:57 in Photoshop (versus 3:01)?but enough to show that raw processing is not necessarily the ThinkStation's greatest strength.

Lenovo does come out securely on the top in one area. Although we know that no one would ever deign to use a workstation as beefy as the S30 for gaming, its upper-end video card gives it enough oomph to occupy the top of the results chart for Futuremark 3DMark 11 and for our gaming tests at lower resolutions and detail settings. These numbers could be improved by swapping out the Quadro for a dedicated gaming card, but at the business tasks for which S30 was intended the original card is definitely the preferable way to go.

That Quadro 4000, by the way, is the best argument in favor of the Lenovo ThinkStation S30: It gives this system powerful capabilities that could serve you well in all manner of drafting and rendering scenarios. But because those are specialized needs that won't apply to everyone, we're sticking with the Dell Precision T1600 as our Editors' Choice: It's a slightly stronger performer in terms of everyday processing, and costs nearly $500 less, making it more attractive for a broader range of professional uses. If, on the other hand, you need that extra graphics oomph, the ThinkStation S30 is an excellent choice.

From Zero to Hero: The Evolution of Computers

Most people use a computer on a day-to-day basis but rarely think about the origins of a machine that has become so?indispensable. But the question ?Who invented the computer?? is not an easy one to answer as many inventors throughout the years have contributed to the technology we use now. Let?s take a look at the brief journey from desktop computers to tablet computers in order to get a grip on the astounding speed at which technology has moved.

Desktop computers

The first personal computers targeted at the general public were developed in the 1970s and 1980s and included models like the IBM Personal Computer and the Apple II series. This marked a step away from specialised scientific and business-based computers and a step into the broad consumer market. These personal computers could fit in people?s homes and offices and would soon incorporate friendly operating systems like Macintosh and Windows.

Laptop computers

Laptops were groundbreaking when first released in the early 1980s as they included the same elements as a desktop ? screen, keyboard, mouse or touchpad and speaks ? but combined them with real portability. By the 1990s, colour screens were introduced and CD-ROM, DVD and Blu-ray capability were introduced in the 2000s.

Phones

The introduction of Blackberries, iPhones and pocket PCs is perhaps the most pivotal development in computer technology in the last decade. It allows people to be permanently contactable through emails, contacts, appointments, social media and instant messaging services like BBM and WhatsApp. Phones became mini computers.

Tablet computers

Tablets are larger than mobile phones but smaller than laptops and without a flip screen. They are usually operated through a touch screen or a digital pen and have become increasingly popular in recent years. Apple spearheaded the tablet revolution with the launch of the iPad in 2010. It used similar technology to that of its iPhone and hence made it easy for users, who commonly had experience using the interface. Tablets usually have wireless internet functions, apps, email and social media devices, cameras and e-book reading.

Where to now?

Technology is always finding incredible new ways to impress and astound us. You can already see how far we?ve come in the last 50 years; imagine what the next 50 could hold! From driverless cars to Google glasses, which feature phone functions, GPS, a camera and voice control ? one thing is for sure, it won?t be boring! Most of us couldn?t imagine a life without computers and they are only set to become more and more important to us ? if that?s even possible?

Sarah Oatley is a freelance writer with a technology addiction. She always wants to get her hands on the latest products and gadgets but can?t afford to buy everything she would like. She uses RentSmart?to access the latest technology for a fraction of the price.

Norway court to decide mass killer Breivik's sanity

OSLO (Reuters) - A Norwegian court found Anders Behring Breivik sane on Friday and gave him a maximum jail term for murdering 77 people in a shooting and bombing last year, offering closure to a Nordic nation devastated by its worst attack since World War Two.

Breivik, who has admitted blowing up the Oslo government headquarters with a fertiliser bomb, killing eight, before gunning down 69 at the ruling party's summer youth camp, was sentenced to 21 years in prison, the maximum penalty in Norway.

But officials can prevent his release indefinitely and are expected to do so if the anti-Muslim right-winger still poses a threat. Breivik had rejected prosecutors' arguments that he was mad, and had said he would appeal if he were ruled insane.

"In a unanimous decision ... the court sentences the defendant to 21 years of preventive detention," said judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen, dismissing the prosecutor's call for a verdict that would have labelled Breivik insane and have confined him indefinitely to psychiatric care.

The killings shook this nation of five million which had prided itself as a safe haven from much of the world's troubles, raising questions about the prevalence of far-right views in a country where oil wealth has attracted rising immigration.

Breivik, 33, will be kept in isolation inside Ila Prison on the outskirts of Oslo inside relatively spacious quarters that include a separate exercise room, a computer and a television.

Criminal guilt was never an issue as Breivik acknowledged and described in horrific detail his murders. His 10-week trial focused on his sanity, with prosecutors arguing he should be declared insane and held in a mental hospital, not jail.

For many survivors the actual verdict was academic. But the trial that went into every detail of the day-long killing spree, Norway's worst massacre since the Second World War, offered some closure for families.

Some survivors wanted a sane verdict, which makes clear that Breivik is responsible for his actions and also makes a protracted appeal unlikely.

Breivik has described an insane verdict as "a fate worse than death". Were he to have been found insane and decided to appeal, the entire trial would have had to be repeated.

Breivik justified his killing spree arguing that the centre-left Labour party is deliberately destroying the nation by encouraging Muslim immigration.

Although his victims were mostly teenagers, with some as young as 14, he rejected being called a child murderer, arguing that his victims were brainwashed "cultural Marxists" whose political activism would adulterate pure Norwegian blood.

He stalked his victims dressed as a policeman, tricking them into thinking he was the help sent from the shore, then shot them from close range before finishing them with a shot to the head.

"I stand by what I have done and I would still do it again." he said during his court testimony.

One team of court appointed psychiatrists concluded he was psychotic while another came to the opposing conclusion. To make the ruling more difficult, several other experts who testified described a slew of mental conditions Breivik probably suffered.

Still, polls showed that around 70 percent of Norway's public thought such a complex attack could not have been carried out by a madman and Breivik had to bear responsibility.

"The most important thing for me is not weather he is sent to a mental hospital or jail, it's just that he remains off the streets (and) he is never let out," Vegard Groslie Wennesland, a survivor of the attack said before the verdict.

Breivik has said he would accept a sane verdict, but derided a jail term as "pathetic", and said acquittal or execution were the only reasonable outcomes.

A commission investigating the attack earlier this month concluded that all of part of it could have been prevented and intelligence, police and government blunders likely cost lives.

(AP) ? Pakistan is investigating whether the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, which has been blamed for high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan, was killed in a U.S. drone strike this week, officials said Saturday.

If confirmed, the death of Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the network's day-to-day operations commander, would mark a major blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, and viewed by the U.S. as a powerful enemy in neighboring Afghanistan.

Two Pakistani intelligence officials said Saturday they are 90 percent certain Badruddin was killed Tuesday in North Waziristan in an American missile attack. They said their information was based on reports received from their agents in the field but acknowledged they haven't spoken to anyone who has seen the body.

A senior Taliban commander said a U.S. drone strike killed Badruddin. There was no independent confirmation, and the U.S. does not comment publicly on the controversial drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

All spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the news.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan. He is believed to be the network's day-to-day operations commander, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War.

Replacing him would be a challenge but not impossible, said Daniel Markey, a Pakistan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"The question would be whether anyone would be as trusted, as well-placed, would have forged the kind of longstanding connections and would have the kind of pedigree that he has," said Markey. "This is a big hit if it's true but it's not going to put them out of business."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter, David Rohde, the department said.

"During his captivity, Badruddin forced Rohde to make videos and write letters demanding money and a prisoner exchange as conditions for his release. Badruddin threatened Rohde's two Afghan companions in order to compel him to cooperate, and threatened to kill all three of them if his demands were not met," the State Department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

The U.S. faults Islamabad for what it says is a failure to go after the group, which has essentially made its base in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region, which borders Afghanistan.

Pakistan has said its forces, which have been fighting an insurgency that has already cost more than 30,000 Pakistani lives, are overstretched and unable to launch an attack in North Waziristan. Recently U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Pakistani officials indicated that they would carry out an operation in North Waziristan soon but there has been no indication that a large-scale operation is in the offing.

It's unclear whether the U.S. received any assistance from the Pakistani military in tracking down Badruddin. If they had cooperated on the hit, it would mark a significant improvement in U.S.-Pakistan relations. The strike came the same week that NATO forces in Afghanistan killed a senior Pakistani Taliban commander operating in Afghanistan. Pakistan has long been pushing the U.S. and NATO to do more to combat Pakistani Taliban militants that it says use Afghanistan as a safe haven.

However, moving against the Haqqanis would be an about-face for Pakistan, which is believed to view its relationship with the network as important in helping shape Afghanistan after American and other international troops leave. The Pakistani military also faces the risk that if the Haqqanis are challenged, they will likely turn their considerable resources and expertise to attacking Pakistani targets, something the network has rarely done.
